Even though I drive a GEN 2 with the 3vze the 3 gen has better eng options. It is quite surprising to me that the 3vze engine did not destroy the the 4runner name

1gen is too angular for my likes... late 2nd is just right. 3rd and higher... well, i'd hate to bang 'em up on the trail. i was longing after a 2nd-gen but re-fell in love with my pickup.

You're correct
4runners;
1st gen: 1984/1985-1989
2nd gen: 1990-1995
3rd gen:1996-somethin....

Pickups;
1st gen: approx 1982-1984
2nd gen: 1985-1988
3rd gen: 1989-1995

(i'm knowlageable about the 1st 2 gens of 4runners and the 2nd two gens of pickups, because those are the only ones I really care for in terms of exterior styling, so i know a lot of that stuff by heart but past that is a bluurrrrrr.)

1st Gen because:

Solid Front Axle
Removable Topper
Role cage
REAL tail gate (c'mon... it's an SUV not a glorified minivan... it's only an SUV if it has a tailgate)

I'd like to see a 1st Gen with solid fronts (coils instead of leafs) with a a 3.4L or a 4.0L and a 5 speed manual tranny. Keep everything else on the runner the same. That'd be my dream runner... but then again I'm a truck guy so I'd opt for the Back to the Future Truck with the same engines as mentioned above.

Amzing, 2nd gen pulled ahead. It was behind first gen for like the first 3 months.

That's awsome, I watched those movies just a few days ago... It's the second time i've paused and zoomed in on the truck to get a good look at it...

It's actually what I believe to be is the very first thing that drew me to liking toyota's.... I think i'll take a look at it again tonight, i was just thinking about it and i think they actually may have used a few different trucks... It seemed that the truck used in the closing scenes of the 3rd movie was lower to the ground and not as attractive asthetically... but maybe it's my imagination.

It's just that when you first see it on the statler toyota flatbed tow rig it's gota perfectly proportioned lift, and later it looks different (from what i remember)

2nd Gen all the way. How can you not love a tailgate on the back of a 4runner? The first gens look too much like small pickups with camper shells on the back. The 2nd gens were the last of the 4runners to be TRUCKS, after that, toyota started focusing their sales appeal towards people who needed to fit more kids in the car to take to soccer practice (hence the hatch-back style rear doors). haha im just kiddin', all 4runners are awesome

I like the 1st, and 2nd. Toyota is loosing its solid truck look and starting to go towards the Chevy Avalanche vibe, which I think is butt ugly. All that plastic molding just gets scraped off anyway. Squared off wheel wells?...What is that?

I voted for the 2 gen because it hadf all the best qualities... it was still a truck not a jazzed up car thingy, and it is cheap to buy these days and you can do a lot with it without feeling bad about messing with a classic(1 gen), the only thing i did'nt like about the 3 gen was that you can't get a 5 stick to save your life and that euro front end .
but thats just my opinion aviator
