I need to pull my engine, all that's left is the block, head and everything's off. I will eventually be pulling the transmission, so is it easier to pull them together and wrestle them apart in the garage, or is it easier to separate them when one's still bolted in to the truck?

I've never done this before..I have pulled a tranny, but never rented a hoist and pulled the engine, so I'm a bit clueless here.

Once the engine's out, how heavy is it? Could two people get it wherever it needs to be moved to, or is it too heavy for that? Thanks!

 

I am going to say it would be easier to pull them out still bolted together since you wouldn't have to get at the pita top bellhousing bolts. Once you get it out it helps to set it down on a dolly of some sort so you can move it around easily. You can make one out of plywood and 4 caster wheels.

Yeah if you have a cherry picker it will prolly be easier to pull them both, otherwise you need to have a ton of wratchet extension at odd angled under neath the truck to get at the 2 top bell housing bolts!

 

ya i just pulled my engine and it was a pain

 

i recently pulled my tranny and the top bellhousing bolts really arent as much of a pain as they say they are. a good 3/8 drive socket wrench, extensions (two 6" and one 3") and a couple swivels will get the job done. thats what i did and i worked out just fine. never pulled a motor but from what i know i'd pull the tranny and have it on a tranny jack, then get a cherrypicker to pull the motor out separate. you're gonna need em apart anyways cause i'd bet you're gonna redo all the clutch components. I'd put the motor back in and mount it first then bolt the tranny up. trust me, with as tight as it is in the engine bay, you won't want that tranny in the way when you're puttin the motor back in.

really any way of doin it is fine but thats what i'd do. either way its gonna be a pain in the @$$ haha

 

Yeah, the one thing that's certain is that it will be a pita! Ok, thanks everyone. Most of the engine is already out, just the block's left so there should be a bit more room to get at those bolts. I almost wonder if a few of us could get it without a hoist at this point.....but might as well rent the hoist.

 

Rent or borrow the hoist just so you don't have any accidents. It's not a big engine but it's still heavy if it's the longblock. If it was just the shortblock it's not too bad, but the head adds another 50 pounds or so.

Unless you have a good leveler, separate them. I tried to install my Chevy 350/toyota trans combo as a unit into my 4Runner, and it just diddnt work. The trans/transfer is soo long and heavy it tips backwards and is really hard to maneuver.

Getting it out might not be as bad. But without the leveler its just going to hit the ground as soon as you remove the trans from the mount.

Came out last night no problem, thanks everyone. Now....how do I get the flywheel bolts off since the thing just spins? Tried sticking a bar into the teeth to hold it still but no luck yet.

 

I always use an impact gun. But if you dont have one, they do make a flywheel holding tool.

 

Hmm..ok thanks. But maybe I could make a flywheel holding tool...for cheap...we'll see. Thanks again.
