stingers. do they work? what is their purpose

Ok so im bored and thought i might get a little input. They call them stingers around here, but just to clarify im talkin about the triangle stickin off the front bumper at about a 45 degree angle facing up. i have a bunch of buddies who have them. When i ask the purpose they all say something different. they all talk about how they are life savers, but all the years of wheeling with them never seen them put to use once except for pushing broke rigs. i give them a hard time about them (i think they look stupid) all the time just because i can, but i was wondering if anyone has one and why or how yours has came into play on the trail. thanks

I'm pretty sure they are to help with rollovers. I think they look good as well.

Moved to Newbie Tech Section - also fixed some spelling in your thread title.

Did you try searching?
I searched for "stinger purpose".

Here's one of the better ones.

nope, im happy with my 8in u channel bumper. but i just checked out your link, then about 5 other ones and now fully understand the use of a stinger. i guess my buddies just dont wheel hard enought to need one. my front end is pretty much bullet proof so im not to worried about anything getting crushed(except for myself) in a the event of a end over end roll. you ever heard of anyone mounting a big roller on their front bumper to help "roll" their front end up onto a strait ledge so their front tires can grab?

Never heard of the roller idea, never seen it either.
Might be onto something there, man.
