I'm wondering...what's the idea behind the big, pointy, "stinger" thing on some off-road bumpers? How does it help? What is it intended for? "The bigger it is, the more girls you get?"

...so they do serve a real purpose...

 

yupp...Prevent a vehichle from going end over end, and also in a rollover, can protect that radiator/front end. Some people love them, some hate them..just how it is.

 

some say yes, some say no...

in that case above yes it saved the day, in 80% of other flops it is useless( made the % up...).

the point behind them was if you flip forward it prevents the fall and dosent up your core support and all that good stuff. Others say its good to sit on when working on your engine

personally i think they look preety cool and would get one, but only if they arnt too huge and too far above the hood.

Well, I kind of like them...I'm taking welding class, and was debating that if I have any time to fab a bumper, if I was going to add the "stinger" part or not...still not sure. Well, maybe a small one. Don't really like the gigantic ones.

 

I just love the way you only ever see them on trucks that are already too beat to hell to have them make any difference. But maybe that's just around here.

 

One must ask Molly by golly what the real use of the stinger is for.

 

Marlin makes one where you can get a short hoop or a big hoop. There is only like one pic on the website; but if you search the forum, there is a guy with a red runner that painted the bumpers to match that looks pretty sick. I don't mind the shorter hoops, and will probably get one; but I hate the huge ones that have no purpose on the vehicle. Driving around on lots of ice, they can keep you from falling in a big arse crevice/whole.

The first time I saw bumpers like that was on a show about driving in Alaska. Apparently you can't see crackes in the ice until you've driven into them sometimes, so the big stinger would catch the other side of the crack instead of sending the whole truck straight down. Now they seem to be catching on in regular off road circles.

 

There is a video on trail-gear tv where a guys uses his stinger to get up a concrete ledge.

They really do have a purpose...Even the old beat up rigs that roll around with brand new stingers/bumpers. if you think it sout of place, you need to rethink that. The rig obviously gets wheeled, and wheeled hard. The stinger is there for the NEXT time the guy rolls it 3 times..Instead of the front end rolling on the hood and smashing in the radiator and fan...the front end will roll on the stinger, making the vehichle capable of driving off the trail to see another day ;0

 

Molly's post does show the most practical uses for them

Can keep you from flipping forward, dropping in to a crevass and protect your engine in a roll over.

But nobody here has mentioned the other use for these stingers...
Something to chain your enemies to as you drive down the road ala MadMax...
Personally I would'nt get one myself I don't like the look of them and we also have a lot of crazy rules around here for "pedistrian safety" and I'd probably just get a lot of hassle from John Q. Law...

 

It'll direct the pedestrians down, away from the windshield, eliminating the risk of cuts and scrapes.
