I wasn't sure where to post this but I feel like a noob while researching this so here it is in the noob section. My truck (signature) will be parked for awhile so I can replace most of the worn out suspension among various other upgrades. I will be installing a complete poly bushing kit as well so I figured this would be a good time to give the chassis a little love.

There is a place here that will steam clean under my truck for a very reasonable $59. There is no flaking rust problem so I won't have to scrape and wire brush everything. The bed will be off and suspension apart so everything should be pretty accessible.

My problem is that I live in a townhouse. How bad is the por-15 really? Will I contaminate my whole area with fumes as soon as I start painting? If so how long will it smell for? Ive done lots of spray painting in the garage, how does the smell compare? I plan on one coat of por-15 and one coat of chassis black on everything under the vehicle. How much would you recommend I buy? I won't be coating the inside of the frame, just painting the exterior with a roller and brush.

Another thing I'm wondering about is what happens if I weld anything to the frame at a later date (sliders)? Is it the same as regular paint? Just grind the area bare and paint over when finished?

Any help or advise is appreciated. This is feeling like a pretty daunting project.

 

I've done part of my 40 and I didn't have any overwhelming fumes, but it could be cause my nostrils are fried anyway... Didn't get high either. Oh well...

And you can just grind as normal, and repaint.

if you put it on good, grinding will me hard i painted my moms 4runners rims with por-15 and you could hit them with a hammer and they looked no differnt. and the fumes arent bad at all clear coat spray paint is worse. and make sure you do good prep work before you paint or it wont turn out very good. all of the por products are all about the prep

 

when welding stuff to the frame make sure its clean, and just any old spray paint will work

 

spray paint will work but it wont last or protect it as much as por-15 will

 

Glad to hear the fumes aren't bad. Obviously ill be wearing a respirator, rubber gloves and probably one of those white disposable suits.

 

are you painting in a incloused space? because i painted my mufler in my basement with por-20(same stuff just high heat)and i had the pellet stove going and there were no fumes that i could smell, and i didnt get high ethier. spray paint clear coat gets you high i got id carded at tractor supply for buying like 6 cans lol. and apparently known to the state of california por-15 causes cancer but i dont live there

 

Supposedly, 2 quarts will do a frame. I got two pints to do my truck, but I keep looking at the cans and then at the frame thinking, "How the hell are those two little cans going to cover this whole frame?!" I can let you know in about two weeks when I have my frame ready to paint.
