Piece (basket?) missing from VSV, do i need it?

I just discovered that the PO had the vacuum routing all messed up on my 2.4. After correcting the routing i am left with two VSV's that have an open port. From looking around online i see that there should be a black plastic piece on the open port, i think it's called a "basket". I have attached a pic of one with and without the part i am referring to.

My question(s) is:

Do i NEED that piece?

or can i just cap it?

or should i leave it open?

It looks to me like the port should be open (to act as a blow-off) and the "basket" just keeps it from getting crap inside. But it hard to tell from a 2-D pic. Eventually i'm sure i will find one at P&P but until then.... I have tested the VSV and it clicks when voltage is applied so they're just missing that piece.

Thanks in advance.

No you do not need it.

It may be called a basket, but it is just a filter. When the the FPR calles for no vaccum, it pulls air in...

Mine is broke off to and my truck runs fine.

Good luck finding a new VSV. That one you have pictured is for the FPR and Toyota discontinued making them...at least for mine anyway. The only place I've been able to find them is ebay and members who part out trucks.

I was able to score a couple from guys parting out trucks on here and snaged them up. I hold on to them like gold and will put them on if mine ever gives me fits...
