Newbie Knowledge
So I'm new to mechanics, and am interested in any knowledge I can absorb 
Hypothetically, what exactly would it take to convert my 2000 toyota tacoma prerunner from 2WD to 4WD? Also, what does it take to convert from automatic to manual transmission? Thanks

Best starting point would be a donor vehicle similar to yours (same engine and vintage) with 4WD and manual trans. Then swap everything over. Or better yet, sell yours and buy a 4WD model.

Get a basic understanding of how the internal combustion engine works.
learn the basics of the drive train the brake system
Once you under stand the concepts of how things work it is much easier to troubleshoot problems.
