define not work. Couple issues that it can be depending on what the gauge is doing.

You can unplug the sending unit at the tank and check for power at the end of the plug. If the wiring and gauge are good the test light will light up an the gauge will change position. This will tell you if it is a bad sending unit or a wiring /gauge problem. This works on older trucks without the pump in the tank. I have not tried it on the ones with the fuel light and a fuel pump in the tank ,but I think it will work.

thanks ill be checking that for sure once it gets a little warmer, i thought i read some where that you have access to the sending unit and pump by removing the back seat lifting the carpet and removing the access door?

yeah, its true, toyota thinks of everything! the access panel is there, 7 or so little screws to remove and the top of the tank and all wires and access to the fuel pump are right there! its on the passenger side, at least on my 88 4runner its there.

i have an 89 sr5 3.0, my gas gauge works when the tank is filled up, then when the fuel level goes down a bit it falls to empty. i have been just watching mileage to fill back up. any rhyme or reason for this? fairly new to playing with toyotas, other than my '99 tacoma i had. i think i have most of the other bugs worked out for now. thanks brian

hey brian read xxxtreme22r build thread for his pickup, he had an issue and it turns out that the connector was corrioded off the sending unit, my gauge doesnt at all, id check the connector and wiring for it. you can access the pump and sending unit from under the passenger seat. there is a access plate remove the screws and you have access.

yours is a different problem then the original posters. Problem with the gauge like you describe is almost always the sender itself. Since you can read full and not half or empty your connections at the gauge are fine.

There is an article somewhere that describes what the cause your problem is. I'll have to find it.

Yeah mine does the same thing as korkskru's. It shows full when i fill it up but it goes down and shows empty and only lets me put 5 or 6 gallons in when it shows completely empty.

Mine used to do that, new sender fixed the problem. Suspect mine was the result of the PO owner installing a new battery backwards before I bought the truck. See below for some testing/repair ideas:

Have head of folks repairing the resistor strip if it is not damaged too bad.
