Question 22r to 22re

i have seen that many others are trying to swap their yota motors.
So my question is: what is the best motor to put into a 87 toy 4x4?
it has a 22r that needs to be rebuilt.
should i :
rebuild 22r?
swap for 22re?
swap for different toy motor?
or???
please help

It really depends on what you want, the easy thing to do is rebuild the motor you have now. But if your up for a project then you could swap in a 3.4 engine, its a lot of work and a lot of wiring, but its well worth it. Check out the engine swap section and you will find all of the info you need.

22re is pretty much the same motor just electronic fuel injection in place of the carb...

You'd better have either skills or money if you're going to swap. Putting in an RE means getting that engine, plus the gas tank, and the entire wiring harness from an RE truck. Then figuring out where all the wires connect, using wiring diagrams from your year FSM and from the year FSM the donor engine came from.

Same for the 3.4. I guess if it were me, and I was going to go through all that work, might as well go with the 3.4. But when my 22R needed to be rebuilt, rebuilding was the route I went. Wasn't up for that large of a project (RE or 3.4 swap) then, and I'm still not right now...

my question is, what (if anything) is different between a 1986 22r and a 1986 22re motor aside from the fuel injection. The reason i ask this is i have an 86 22r p/u with head gasket issues but i have access to a 22re also from 86 with only 40k miles and would like to just swap the engine and keep the carb setup i currently have. Please assist =)

Red face

Pretty much the whole fuel system plus the ECU and the wiring harness for the fuel injection. Of course the AFM and intake system

The fuel pressure if you didn`t know is much higher for the FI as well as the filter being able to handle the higher pressure.

You could get away with a external fuel pump mounted as close to the tank as possible as long as it meets the needs of your engine and you have the stock fuel pressure regulator

so a 22r intake manifold will bolt onto a 22re head? what about a spot on the 22re head for a mechanical fuel pump that my 22r has?

I would rebuild, but in my experience, if you rebuild make sure you bore the block. You can do this and have a new motor for same price as used one - the work.

The head should have a plate bolted to it where the fuel pump goes, my intake bolted right up.

I wish I would have went with the fuel injection tho.
