Weird "warmish" start problem

Ok so cold start and a fully warmed up start are fine, but when I turn it on and drive about 4 miles (5-8 mins) to the local grocery store, turn it off and get some groceries (10-15 mins), when i come back out to the truck and turn it on she will go to about 300-500 rpms and get a short lived knocking sound (.5-1 second) and she will stay at at that low idle until i give her a little gas, then she resumes her normal idle of about 900-1000.

On a cold start in the morning she will fire right up and idle high, 1200-1300, till she warms up then calms down to the normal 900-1000. And if i drive a good 20+ minutes and get out for a 10 minute stroll she fires right up to 900-1000.

Also it can be provoked when i fully warm her up and then turn it off for about 2 hours, I think she cools down to that "warmish" temp by then.

Confused as to whats doing this, any help would be great

EDIT: tag along question: (dont wanna polute the forums with more threads) so when i changed my O2 sensor i accidentally laid it down in a pile of JB weld catalyst (just the red tube) and got a little on the sensor tip, i cleaned it off and installed it, would this affect the performance of it?

Mine tends to have the same symptoms I just drive it. Cold starts fine, hot starts fine, let sit for 15 min after warming up completely...she idles a bit slow 400-500 then picks up in about 15 seconds. Never stalled from idling too slow.

As far as JB Wield, not sure, I can't imagine that it helped at all but as long as it's clean and no codes I'm guessing your alright...

I would say your AFM is just on the edge of not turning on the COR. The COR will click on and off thus your fuel pump will go on and off. Once you give it gas your AFM door opens more and everything goes to normal. The only solution to this problem is to take the fuel pump off the COR or get a new (used) AFM and see if that changes it. This is all just a guess but this is a common thing with 22re's. At lease all the ones I have owned (6). I would just live with it.

Yea its just old airflow meter issue. it won't hurt until it totally goes out mine does the same thing. Generally sometimes this is cuased by wrong igntion timing. double check timing and set idle correctly it may help a bit but for now just cruise right alot. Oh and a helpful tip. The 22re does not like short trips. So if you go somewhere try not to go to the store 2 mins away go in for 30 secs come back out and start her right up. i've found that once you arive at your destination just let her idle for 30secs and she won't do this.... may not work for all but it helps for mine. Also check your distributor and pick-up coil.

Also check that you have no leaks from the AFM to throttle body.

AFM. Air flow meter. Or some people that don't know too much about them call them mass airflow sensors. and yes its above the air box.
