Completely desmoged the 22r as per write ups here. Installed a Weber 32/36 carb. When I start the motor, goes strait to a strong 4k rpm. Idle adjustments are backed all the way down. Tried to decrease fuel by lightly closing the fuel/air mixture and barely opening the fuel pressure regulator. Still high idle. Adjusted the choke and checked for vacuum leakes at the hoses. I tried various vacuum hoses, etc. So far still 4k rpm on startup. I am using a one piece LCE spiral adapter. So far I am running this open LCE headers. Any help would be appreciated>>>>

Questions:
Could this be caused possibly by wrong fuel lines hook up?

Would a small vacuum leak at the base of the carb cause such a high rpm?

Am I missing any adjustments or screws?

I would say a vacuum leak most likely. I have had the 32/36 and now a 38 on my de-smogged 87 22r. Runs great. The LCE adapter is great but it doesn't eliminate a possible leak at the base of either the adapter/manifold or adapter/carb base. I used Hylomar to seal my LCE adapter just to be sure. I run the fuel pressure at 2.5 - 3 lbs. How many vacuum hoses do you have left? I only have one vacuum line which runs from the carb to the disty (one closest to the radiator, other is plugged). I have the PCV line connected and the breather line from the valve cover. That's it. Other than the idle setting I don't think any other screws or adjustments will cause your problem unless one fell completely out. It's simple and pretty quick to yank the carb and adapter to put sealant on the gaskets. Just my two cents. I'm sure you will get lots of help and maybe some disagreement so just hang in there.

 

Thanks, I only have the one vacuum line like you. I originaly had two like the desmog tutorial indicated. In the past a vacuum leak meant rough and stumbling idle. Would a vacuum leak really cause a super high STRONG idle. Thanks for your suggestion, I'm on it.

Yep. You might try spraying some propane from a small torch (bernzomatic) at the base of the adapter, base of the carb and all around the carb. WD40 works too but not as well. The speed normally increases when you spay a vacuum leak but I'm not sure you'll notice with it running at 4k already. Also, have you looked down the throat of the carb to make sure the throttle plates are closed completely?

 

OK, took apart the bases off the carb and sealed everything. One cork seal was soaked in fuel. did not use hylomar. I used ultra black because it's what I had laying around and did not want to spend yet another 20 bucks. Will start it up tonight or the am maybe, it's been 107 degrees all day here so it's beer time.

 

Sealing the gaskets made it worse. However, I found the problem. the secondary throttle plate linkage was not hooked up, plus I was missing a spring to keep it closed tight. Once I fixed this problem, it went to idle. The problem was without the spring it was going to wide open throttle.
Now all I need to do is adust idle, timing, fuel flow, etc.
