hello everyone , I have 87 2 wheel drive truck 22r carb. been having starting problems. i replaced the coil and ignitor still very hard to start, sometimes it wont start at all. when it does start you have to grind on the starter,also poured little bit of gas down the carb still would not fire. it seems when it sits overnight its very hard to start in the morning. thanks for reading, let me know what could be the problem.

 

Kinda hard to even get a idea.

Cap rotor wires and spark plugs are just as important

My 87 engines were really finicky they gave me fits till I started using the wires from Toyota

What shape is the carb in I have seen some in need of a good rebuild.

 

I put new tuneup in last winter. put a used coil and igniter from runing toyota last weekend thought it fixed it but did not. once you get it started u can drive all day long with no problems. Its very hard to start when it sits overnight. It seems prior to this problem it took extra cranking before it started. last night when i got off work jump in no start. Pulled the sparkplug wire from from coil to dist no spark. this thing has me stumped, any ideas i need to look at

 

What do your spark Plugs look like??

Once your plugs fire and the engine starts they stay clean till it sits over night.

 

Is your choke working? That's the most common cause of cold starting issues on carburated engines. ("Cold" being any time the engine coolant temperature is below about 100 degreesF)

 

I could be wrong, but I think you want to check for spark at one of the plug wires, not the wire coming the from the coil. I'm pretty sure you need to have the distributor in the loop to get a spark.

 

Its got ac plugs and yes the choke is working. Tried to start today still nothing. Could it be ignition switch. Keep the ideas coming guys. I think you for posting.

 

This truck is crazy, had to leave it at wouldnt start. Got this morning fired right. I dont get it with this truck.

 

Try the part your key goes into and or the part that connects to the underside of it. (ignition lock cylinder and or ignition switch) I'm having a similar problem. Drove over some railroad tracks (my keys are heavy and my ignition lock cylinder is og) and my motor just started to sputter and die. he cranks over but won't fire up. i got a new battery, cap, rotor, distributor, coil and fuel filter still no go. I talked with someone who knows way more than me and he said that it's most likely one of three things the two mentioned up top and or a ignitor. since you put a working one (ignitor) in yours and its still not working i would assume that it's closer to the key. I don't know everything but i bet it's one of those things. I'm walking to o'rileys in the morning to get that stuff. I'll keep you posted. good luck.

 

well its got cold again and guess what the truck not firing. Drove it all summer long no problems. I just dont get it. i need help please.

 

You might want to post where you live help could be close at hand.

As it worked all summer long and started to give a problem in colder weather.

Just how cold was it when it started to act up again??

Yet once it does start your good as long as the engine is warm.

The only thing I can think of is the cooler temps cause a contraction enough to open a circuit that takes out the ignition then the cranking gets the plugs wet adding more grief to the problem.

The second would be the contraction causes the needle valve to be open enough gas siphons out of the carb. I have seen enough moisture in a carb to freeze when temps drop below freezing .

These are just a guess but might be a place to start.

It has to be a ignition or fuel problem unless your air filter is long over due for changing

 

I live in ohio. Once u get started and warm ,u can drive all day long. I hate to junk it the truck is great on gas and runs great when it starts.The choke works as it should. It looks like someone has had the problem before because someone has skin some wires checking for power.Is there someway to run a hot wire to the battery to the ignitor ?

 

I live in S. E ohio I also put some gas down carb, still no go.

 

That pretty much says it is an ignition issue.

The black/red stripe wire is the voltage going to the igniter check for voltage there it should be present in both the start

and run position .

Also make sure the igniter has a good ground

As it grounds through the mounting bracket

Also make sure the noise filter is good if that is open it could could problems

Any loose connections in the ignition circuit could cause the problem

 

After 30 minutes of trying to start it and wiggle wires and checking connections it started. Runs as it should.I just dont get it.

Ran a hot wire to the igniter , still wont fire, but I connected the hot wire to igniter I hear a clicking noise in the carb. After 1 hr of cranking it finally started and ran as it should but when I came home tonight I check it to see if would start and it wont. This is crazy.
