19 MPG on first tank since I bought it, after new plugs, ignition wires, distributor rotor & cap,

After that first tankful, I Seafoamed and put STP fuel injector cleaner. We'll see if it improves, when I empty this tankful.

Went and bought the seafoam, guy at the shop swears by it so I'm hoping for decent results. Also picked up all the grease, sealer and oil I need to put in the 3rd members with brand new 4:88. Should be a productive weekend \o/

It's been mentioned, I'm sure, .... and it's probably not the right place to float it, .... but I've noticed with every one of 7 Toyota trucks............

1. When on a full tank, it stays over full for around 50mi. on the hwy or 30city, before it just DROPS LIKE A BANSHEE, thereafter.......

2. UNTIL it get's to around 1/4 tank or less, left.... Then it seems to stay on 'near empty' for another 40 miles.......... The center 2/3rds?>>>GONE, QUICK-- IT'S LIKE THEY'RE ALL GAUGES DESIGNED TO MESS WITH US! lol.

Again, ....this tank,....... I'm looking at around 200 miles to 15 gallons. I didn't baby it as much this tank... but after next tank(filling up today), I will have, the whole time... We'll see, ...........again, lol.

I don't smell or see ANY leaks, anywhere, ..... new fuel pump, ....... NOT sure if the FPR or damper are/could be causing any issues, ..... NOT sure if EVAP/Charcoal Canister is/could be causing issues, ....... NOT sure if replacement AFM from seller on here is set up for different atmosphere/elevation or what not, ...doubt it, ..... Just need TIME to fish through it all.

Man, all these high mileage stories bum me out! I bought my son a 94 4runner, V6 (199k miles), Auto, 4.88's running 32x11.50 tires. I am getting a solid 10 mpg in the city. Haven't had it long enough for a good highway run, but I hope I can get into the low teens.
Had to go through a smog ordeal, so it has a new O2 sensor, new cat, and I have it timed at about 15 degrees right now. At 10 degrees, it was a SLUG.

Isn't that due to the float in the tank?

Hey SD,.... I feel ya!

I had mileage issues before the rebuild, where i replaced, since 2010;

Full rebuild, new exhaust/CAT/Muffler w/LCE Header, New Fuel Pump, New 02, Newly restored Injectors, New Radiator, New Alternator, New TPS, all new vacuum lines.... pretty much everything, lol....

NOT NEW;

AFM, Charcoal Canister, all fuel lines, dizzy, coil and ignitor.... Few other things but nothing that I THINK would be related.

Whatever it is, either it's a coincidence, or something remaining from 'original status' is causing me some bad mileage. Hmmmmmm, lol. Again, I have to be fair and mention..... I live on a hill that's 2K up from sea level.... which I'm up and down 1-2 times in a day out and about..... and I DO stomp on it on OCCASIONS, ...but not every time I travel from one stop light to the next or anything like that, lol.

I suppose so... .Maybe it's just a 'design' circumstance? Could be hanging up as it initially drops due to build up of some kind... then hanging up toward the end..... But dang, in every of 7 vehicles? lol.... Even my 89 4x4 PU.... same thing. And that was only 10 years old at the time.

Oh well, I've got it down, so at least I wont run out, right? lol. Another thing though, is; I have around 3.5 Gallons left every time the light comes on.... EVERY one of those rigs, as well. I think it's just a 'circumstance of design'...>?? Not trying to make it a discussion, just thinking out loud, hahahaa. I should have posted that in the "You know you drive a toyota when........" lol.

My '90 holds 5 gallons above the full mark and about 2-3 below the empty mark. I think they're pretty much all like that. On the highway I can go about 100 miles before the needle even gets to 'F' lol.

chefyota4x4, Mine did the same thing. The problem in the end was the gas tank float, which I suppose is to be expected on a 27 year old truck. The ONLY way I figured it out was by grabbing the bed and rocking the truck. I heard a metal ticking noise... the float was not properly going up and down. New float...problem solved. Now I actually know how much is in there You can also switch the the whole thing out to a digital float and gauge which is nice, but costs money. GL

I go 100 miles before it starts coming off of full. Goes pretty quick to 1/4. I can go forever with it on 1/4.

Thanks for the great confirmation/answers, guys lol... I KNEW it was an issue with MOST rigs, ... Old Toyo's, anyway... but just still trip on it! lol. Nonetheless, .... float working or not, ... I know what I'm putting in after 200 miles, .... 14gallons, yesterday..... SUX! lol.

I WILL take that info and fix it though.... Even though I've got it figured out(like most do) to where I wont run out or put myself in dire straights.... I want it to work how it's supposed to... Did you remove the tank for replacement of the float? I have a 4Runner.... Can I get it without removing the tank on mine? (Not sure if my Russet potatoes for hands will get in there! lol).

Mine was all taken apart when I did mine but I'm fairly certain you will have to remove the tank to get to it. It's screwed into the TOP of the tank which would make it difficult to get at while ON the vehicle. Not a hard job, just takes a bit of time. Here is a pic of a (new) one, but your old runner's looks very similar to give you an idea. Good luck.

Hmmm..... It's not attached to the pump assembly, right? It's near the back of the tank, right? I'll have to hit the FSM and take a look...... Thanks, ZK

yes, it is near the back of the tank. There are two ports and the back one is for the float. =]
