92 pickup ext cab. 4x4 3.0. The only real test I've given it is with 2 dirtbikes and two sets of gear, tool boxes etc. and I got about 14mpg. I'd like to get a wee bit better any opinions?oh it has 31x10.5 tires.with exhaust

thats impressive for a 3.0. my old 3.0 got 16mph with a feather foot on the freeway and it had stock tires, your probably getting worse gas mileage than registering because bigger tires means more ground covered per spin and the ecm speed o it's calibrated for it

gas milage

Hi, just signed up on yotatech 3/6/2012

recently bought a 85 from original owner and put in a new long block. Perhaps it still needs some proper breaking in, however it's getting terrible gas milage. About 10-15mpg running premium unleaded. This truck needs alot of work and the float is busted so my gauge is all over the place.

22r new long block (900 miles)
33's
6'' lift
stock gears (4.10) gonna switch those this weekend to 4.88 among tons of other things..... bought them from trail-gear for a decent price

I would just throw it out there... but you will save money and get better gas mileage running 87 instead of 91. Even give you a little more ponies.
Running high octane gas in low performance motors only waste money and gas and being your motor can't even burn that fuel right
... less power....

Switch octanes... run your mileage test... remember run a better brand
.. not a higher octane... I know from more then just a hunch. Proven facts.

Thanks for the info, I will switch. I would have normally run 87 but my uncle was telling me to run 91 as the engine is a brand new long block and something about the heat transfer in 91 is better and would break in the engine better. Although.. I have read a BUNCH of different approaches to breaking in a 22r...seems like a lot of opinions and not much fact. The only consistent information I got was to start off with like 15 miles, then 20, 25, etc... stepping it up little by little and letting the engine COOL all the way down in between runs...AND cycling the gears (reeving from low to high rpm's through different gears) during these short trips. Anyhow, got about 900 miles on the new block and it's getting horrible gas mileage. I've been going through the service manual all night making a plan to attack the fuel delivery system and carb in attempt to adjust these issues. All advice welcome , I actually haven't messed with this system ever, so it's probably my weakest area on my 85'. Thanks again

running 33s with 4.10 gears on a 22r is going to mess with your gas mileage no matter what the engine is like. the 6" lift will knock it down too cause of aerodynamics.

and second on ditching the premium. you only ever need high octane gas if you have a high compression engine like some sports cars and motorcycles have, and even then its just to prevent pre-ignition (knocking) which happens cause of the high compression. it doesn't offer a performance increase, just keeps those motors from running like crap.

CHUNTR- Yep, the 33's on 4.10 just bleed all the power and torque out of it, gonna get rid of the bogging down effect. I already bought the kit and the ring and pinions, they are planned to go in this weekend. I will post and update next week sometime after I put a couple tanks through it. I've switched to 87 and the gas mileage actually shows some improvement (over 200 miles) but not a significant amount. I was contemplating switching over the intake manifold, etc and converting to a 22re. Do you know or anyone for that matter... know if this will improve the gas mileage and performance any? I'm not really concerned what my gas mileage is, but if it can be significantly improved by making a easy swap or tweaks... why not? Thanks for the info guys

Okayyyyy, now we're talking. I've been REALLY scratching my head about my mileage after my fully/solidly rebuilt 22RE continued to get me 180-240miles on an average 14Gal. fill up.

1. MANY Sensors are new and MOSTLY OEM(CTS is Napa)
2. 22RE/20over/261 CAM and all new Guides, ESki Dual Springs, Viton Seals, New Valves/10-10 Crank/OEM Bearings/LCE Header w/2.25" to the CAT/Borla and out/New OEM Fuel Pump/Fuel Filter/RC Injectors Service
3. 31x10.50x15's on 4.30 Gears/Locked Rear
4. 2" Lift
5. All new and properly working brake system(Nothing hung up)/Suspension/Koyo Wheel Bearings
6. Mostly City Driving/UP a 2K FT Hill every day, 2x a day, fairly steep grade
7. When HWY driving, seem to do more around 19-20....
8. I have tried to stay out of the skinny pedal this tank, most of the way through... And I'm most likely at around 14.5 gallons down from the last fill up and at 190Miles on the ODOMETER.

13.103448 mpg -20 mpg ??????? WTH? That CAN NOT be right..... Something in 'around town' driving(aside from the obvious, LIVING IN LOS ANGELES! lol) is KILLING my mileage! At 4.40$ a Gallon.... I NEED to figure this out or just go for a 24-30MPG SWAP! lol.

Things I'm going to look into;

1.Check the AFM, thoroughly(it's a donor from JBM715), for optimal performance/efficiency(I'll have to study a bit, see if I want to tweak it/if it's needed)

2. Check TPS readings again(New/OEM)

3. Investigate my Charcoal Canister Mystery-Hiss(it makes a sound almost like electrical current buzzing away/Like a Soda Bottle barely cracked)

4. Check into the DAMPER(Had a buddy with a poorly performing one and he replaced it and solved some mileage issues/rich issues)??? lol.

5. See if I can't weld the LCE 02 Bung closer to the Collector or on the 4-Pipe Joining

6. Then, probably scratch my head some more

PS> I REALLY doubt it's anything to do with the internal/mechanical end..... As I got around 20mpg/HWY all the way to Havasu, including the CAHON PASS during the time I was running that TOTALLY SUBAR'd first rebuild I had from that builder/machinist from hell!(at that time, I was getting bad city mileage as well)

Filled up today and calculated 17.3 mpg. A heck of a lot better than the 16 in the dead of winter

I run 91 Octane from Shell or Conoco-Philips, and in SWB 94' 22RE 4x4, I get about 10mpg around town. I attribute this to 134K on stock injectors, a air intake line behind the Mass Airflow Sensor thats got 19 years of mess inside it, 31' MT's and a VERY Flat custom front bumper with No air holes or aerodynamic efficiency.

Save your money, 91 is a waist of good cash, run 87 oct.
