Post your GAS MILEAGE!!
#408
'93 T100 3VZE 3.0L. 14.71 mpg mixed, mostly freeway. Stock. I can't figure out why it's so bad compared to what others have posted here. I do hit 80 on the freeway frequently. Problem is that I can't remember what it got when it was new, so no good comparison. I did change the O2 sensor just to be sure, as well as the VAFM and TPS. Cleaned the injectors and throttle body. No difference.
Any suggestions?

I'm so stoked! This post is for you 10-13 MPG folks out there.
I finally found my mileage black hole! After throwing a few hundred bucks in the way of a new VAFM and TPS, water temp sensor, 02 sensor, as well as a thorough off-the-vehicle injector cleaning and all imaginable checks for vacuum leaks etc...
Turns out if your EGR vacuum modulator is bad, it won't necessarily throw a code! I did the FSM "blow test", by pulling the three tubes off Q, P and R, then plugging P and R with my finger while blowing into Q. Air did not flow that freely, even after cleaning the filter under the cap. There are websites out there that say if you can blow air through the big pipe on the bottom, then its bad. Some folks have the diaphram blow out from heat and exhaust pressure, and it gets caked with soot. After I broke mine open, it was dirty but not obviously broken. I tried spraying cleaner through the ports, but I was not satisfied with it.
I ended up getting a new one (Toyota part# 25870-65010) for my 3VZE 3.slow off ebay for $40 shipped, and I topped off and test drove the freeway. I was not light footed, went 70-80 mph and worked the AC part of the time. Even jumped the start a few times. Went about 51 miles. Topped off again exactly the same way.
Long story short, my mileage shot up from 14.71 MPG to 18.76! That's a 27.5% increase. When gas was $4, that's over a buck a gallon sucked out of my pocket!
I did a lot of research, and found that this modulator accounts for most of the EGR failures in Toyotas, along with the VSV, which in my case tested good.

amazingly got 23.4 coming back from a friends cabin. accidently got ~21mpg driving there, i was stuck behind slow people and too lazy to pass. so on the way back i actually tried to baby it a bit more, average speed was probably around 60mph.
also floored it down hills to gain as much momentum as possible, hit 75 or so, throw it in neutral and coast up the next hill(s) or till it got down to 55mph, repeat next hill. or if it was a long downgrade just throw it in neutral and coast as long as possible.
normally i get 15-17 mixed, when going 80ish on the freeway.

Wow, I guess the K&N Filter Charger does make a difference! I installed it about 10 years ago and also have the LC engineering after market exhaust and am running 31" Muds. I haven't changed the gears so I do add 10 percent to conpensate for the larger tires. I checked this with a GPS unit that shows I'm 10 percent over. that gives me a consistant 24mpg. hyway and city combined. The best I've seen is a few years ago on the way back form Orlando, Fl to here in the White mountians in AZ I did get 29mpg for one tank full along the way. I am also using a Flowmaster 40 muffler and larger tail pipe (I think 2.5") also a free flow CAT. Years ago when all was stock except for the 31's I was getting 17 to 18mpg. The CEL has been on eversince I did the LC engineering exaust. I get the code for a bad CAT due to the decreased exhaust temp. Truck is an '89 4x4 with 4 inch lift. 2.4RE engine and 384,000 miles.
