Opening top of engine. Gaskets? Electrical connectors? Replace?

Hey gang,

I'm taking the top half of my 3.0 apart this spring. Mainly it's to replace injectors, PCV, rear cam seal, valve cover gaskets, stuff like that. Basically a refresh. Down to the heads. 31 years old and 334000 miles, she deserves it.

So if anyone has a handy list on what gaskets I need that would be great!

And also what electrical connectors should I replace while I'm in there? I know they get brittle.

Thanks all!

Easiest way to get gaskets is to buy a gasket head kit. I'd rec Toyota (04112-xxxxx) or OSK.

The connectors I ended up replacing were the ones for the injectors. They were all deteriorated where the spring clip holds them in place. I got connector kits that had pigtail wires in them. Rather than splice wires I took the terminals(brass) out of each connector and slid the old terminals into the new connectors.

If you need terminals, EasternBeaver.com is a great source of quality terminals at a very good price. They sell the same ones Toyota uses in production(Yazaki). You will need an open barrel crimper, though. Vastly better crimp once you get the hang of it. Youtube has some good tutorials

Sorry. I said OSK, but meant Ishino. OSK is very good, though. Just not sure if they have engine gasket sets

When I replaced my 6 injector connectors, I got a set like this: https://www.ebay.com/itm/262880271801 (the set I got had 6 sets, plus an additional 6 pins). I was hoping that, like Jimkola, I could just use the plastic connector body and not use the metal pins. No luck; the pins had a slightly different way of connecting to the body. But not a problem; I just cut off the old pins and crimped on the new ones that went with the new bodies. A crimping tool like this
Amazon Amazon
is more than enough. (The tool folds the part that grips the wire, and the part that grips the insulation. If you use pliers you'll make a mess of it.)

You can avoid the $20 for the crimping tool by buying connectors with "pigtails," but for my money that's much, much worse.

If you're going to replace the Head gaskets, Id make sure to get the Toyota OEM UPDATED gasket set for the 3.0. The Updated set was the one they used to fix all the head gasket problems they had with this engine.

In fact I'd recommend going to somewhere like Yotashop.com to get all the supplies you need. I had to do a Timing belt and waterpump job on my 91 and they only sell OEM equipment for a good price. At
least that's what I'd do. If you want to splurge a bit I'd checkout the ARP headbolt kit for the 3.0. ARP #1024065. Kit seals better and lasts longer than the OE bolts.
Good luck on the build!

I dunno about Yotashop in terms of being a deal.
Get the Toyota part number and starting looking around at some dealers that are aggressive with online sales.

I'm constantly looking for the best quality parts(i.e. oem) at the most reasonable prices; Yotashop and LCE just never make the cut. And I always factor in any tax or shipping costs.
LCE and Yotashop are buying their oem parts from the same dealers you have access to, unless they're going gray market and ordering stuff from Toyota distributers overseas like Amayama. But shoot, you can do that too, if your patient.

Great thank you! I already have that crimping tool, so that's a plus!

Nope, don't have to do the head gaskets, not yet anyway. It's only been 330k miles so far haha.

The recall was done on mine so keeping my fingers crossed!
