Help Identify These Engnbldr Gaskets...
Hey,
I'm in the middle (well, past the middle, I guess) of replacing the headgaskets (and most other engine "top-end" gaskets) on my '93 4Runner. I have the Engnbldr head gasket kit for the 3.0L, which includes head gaskets, valve cover gaskets, intake gaskets, exhaust gaskets, cam seals, etc...
I have torn down everything that I'm planning on tearing down, and I'm in the process of cleaning parts and putting the engine back together.
There are a few gaskets that came with the engnbldr set that I didn't see during the teardown, and I could use some help identifying them. See picture here.
I believe that the six small o-rings (identified as #2 in the picture) are fuel injector seals, but I'm not 100% sure, because the rest of the injector grommets and seals didn't come with the set. As far as the rest of the gaskets in the picture... I have no idea. Just by looking at the stuff that I didn't dismantle in the engine bay, I can't figure out what these would be for.
Any help would be appreciated. If you know what one of them is, just identify it by number from the picture. Thanks.

1 - EGR gasket
2 - Injector seals
3, 4, 6, 7, 8 - Various misc seals that might not be done when replacing headgaskets.... These are included so a single partnumber can service the majority of 3.0 engines. rather then 5-6 diffrent kits, just toss the extra gaskets into 1. And ther eya go
5 - Is the water outlet gasket for the pipe the runs underneath the intake manifold. You shouldn't have to unbolt it, but the gaskets there if you need to replace it.

I can't say for sure, having never torn down a 3.0, BUT...
#1 and #5 look like they're for the EGR system... #1 for a pipe and #5 for where the valve mounts to the head or manifold maybe. 6,7,8 I would venture a guess as coolant (based on size). 3 and 4 I really dont know.... oil/water pump? So big...

For #5, did you mean this connection here (circled in red in the picture?) If so, #5 wouldn't fit there, but now that you got me looking, #1 might fit there (I'm at work now, so I can't go see the truck again until tonight.)
And for #3 and #4, I'm thinking that one of them might be the o-ring for the oil cooler? Which I didn't take apart...
Stock 87... you got me thinking about the oil pump. There is a small round o-ring between the block and the oil pump body (#7 or #8, maybe?) and there is a seal at the end of the oil pump shaft (which might be #6). I didn't take the oil pump apart (and don't plan to...), so I don't know, but that might be what they're for.

I'll play...
3 and 4 are almost definetly for the oil cooler. You might find that 8 is also for the cooler. There are a lot of seals in that little thing.
Guessing 6 and 7 are for the oil pump. One to the block, other at the shaft.
I'd bet 1 is for the red circle, or another water line.
5 and 2 are very tricky.
What do we win for getting the most correct? :bounce2:

Well, I didn't take that coolant line apart last night (circled in red in link to picture in post #4), but by holding the gasket next to the flange, it looks like gasket #1 would fit there.

#4 is your thermostat gasket. I just finialy got my 95 4runner up and rinning last night after doing the same exact thing. Pretty happy with my self. I've never taken apart an engine and it went back together very well and started up the first time I tried. Let me know if I can help with anything since its still fresh in my head.

I know 2 is injector o-rings, 4 is definately oil cooler...and either 7 or 8 is for the oil cooler too. Just pull the old gasket off and see which one matches up. I wouldn't think #1 would be for EGR because that is a hi temp gasket, not paper. Shoot engnbldr an email...he is timely with his responses and will answer all of your questions....awesome guy!

Also I didn't replace #1, 3, 5, 6, 7, or 8. When I was taking it apart I never ran across any of those so I figured that I didn't need them. Thinking about it though I bet #1 is for the O2 sensor. Have you tried that yet?
#10
O2 sensor is another hi temp gasket area...paper would just burn off on exhaust areas. I'd bet 1 is for the water inlet pipe on the front of the block.

Gasket 1 is for the cold start injector. I removed it tonight to clean the upper intake, and there it was. The injector o-rings don't fit onto the injector tightly like they should, so I won't be using them.

Gasket kits usually have the gaskets for several years of motors and all usually aren't needed.
My carquest kit had about 15 left over after the job was done and I used a gasket on everything.

OK... another one identified. Gasket #4 is the thermostat gasket. I took the thermostat out today to flush my cooling system. The existing gasket seemed a little worn, but it wasn't leaking. I put the new one (gasket #4) in there when I put it back together.
Like I mentioned a few posts above, I ended up re-using the injector o-rings, because they were in good shape, and because the ones I got in the engnbldr kit were a bit too loose. One thing to note, however, is that the ones from the engnbldr kit (gasket #2) work well on the PS pump reservoir (the o-ring between the reservoir and the pump). My old one was leaking, and the one I picked up from the dealer was too big (they had a new part number cross-referenced to the old discontinued part number, but it apparantly isn't the right one.) We'll see how long the one I put in lasts.
edit: I was reading through this whole thread after I posted this, and noticed that MAD 4Runner had already identified gasket #4 as being the thermostat gasket. Oh well, I guess it's confirmed.
