need advice quick on runner purchase for 750

I need some advice on a runner that is for sale locally. Its an 88, sr5, 220K, manual, clean/excellent body for the most part. It has about a quarter size rust spot on pass front fender. Original shiny paint & logos. Interior is about a 7/8 out of 10. Asking price is $750.. Now the bad, it has the 3.0 that is in need of a new bearing and rod. The owner was going to fix it but ran out of money and is in need of a 4 door (kids!) the truck is in great shape with the exception of the motor and small rust spot. Im contemplating to buy it an just replace the motor but would like opinions first. My budget is 3K total so a 3.4 swap is out. Id like a 22re but can this be swapped in? all comments are appreciated. thanks

I would rebuild the 3.0 and get a new clutch. Does the 4x4 work? Is the IFS in decent shape? Frame rust?

Hey, to my knowledge, you should be able to put in a 22re without too much problem...you can find 22re's for fairly cheap, too. If the tranny's in good condition, and you don't mind the hassle of swapping the engine, I'd say it's a good buy!

thanks guys, I appreciate the comments.. no frame rust and the drivetrain from the motor back is in good shape, 4x4 works even the rear window! has anyone done a 22re swap? is it worth it?

I would do a new 3.0 or rebuild the old one. If you swap in a 22re you will also need to to the computer, etc.

You will also need a wiring harness to match the computer. That's a little tougher to find.

Sounds like a steal! I vote for keeping the 3.0. The 3.0 w/ the manual might not be a powerhouse, but it is a very smooth engine that will move the 88 very nicely. The torque is very nice also. I have had two 22re's, one, 22r, and two 3.0's, so I have a little experience. My current is a 95 runner w/ the 3.0 and a 5sp. I love this truck. At 190,000 it is smooth, quiet, and will hold 80 mph, w/ the cruise, and ac.

Good luck w/ it!
