Is my starter going bad?

sometimes when i get in my truck to start it, it just clicks, then i roll it off and turn it back off then it starts right up. or if i just sit there and turn it while it clicks it eventually starts... does this sound like a starter problem.

Most likely pitted contacts, if you can pull the starter yourself you can change them for WAY less $$$ than a starter would cost.

x2 on the contacts and solenoid, very cheap fix if you can pull out the starter yourself.

x3 on contacts and solenoid. Toyota starters don't really go bad, the connections get worn. You definitely want to go with a TOYOTA starter if you do decide to replace the unit. Check this out: http://www.4crawler.com/4x4/CheapTricks/Starter.shtml

the starter itself is pretty easy to pull. just a couple bolts that are in some pretty tough spots, took me quite a while to get them out

Yeah, you're going to be busy for a while. It helps if you drain the oil, then you can get the oil pressure sender unit out of the way so you can get an extension to reach that lower bolt. Swivel heads are your friend!

Bingo

http://www.4crawler.com/4x4/CheapTricks/Starter.shtml

Replacing the whole starter would be nuts, the only problems I've *ever* heard with Nippon Denso starters (OEM for Toyota) is the contacts wearing.

EDIT: Pismo Joe already said exactly what I what I said, oops.

on a 22re it takes about 15 mins from start to finish, no need to remove anything else.

Note that those nippon denso starters are factory on many other cars, including the dodge caravan

gotta love a $5 starter fix!

I know they are used on Subaru's, my Outback has almost the same exact starter. It uses the same contacts inside but a little longer plunger and the exterior shape is also different but definitely shares most of its parts.

Haha no worries I'm glad to see other people recommend Roger's write-ups. I just pulled my starter from my 4runner (22re rebuild process) and the idle gear that makes contact with the flywheel is looking pretty warn...$8 from Toyota, you might want to see how yours looks when you pull it!

I just did the contacts on my '95 22RE. If you can pull the starter yourself, it's a super easy fix and will save you a bunch.

thank you so much for this site, i just about made the huge mistake of replaceing the whole starter and me being the cheapskate i am i would have gone with the cheapest starter there is. on the 3 liter it takes 5 minutes to pull. 14 mil swivel with a 1.5foot extension and a impact ( or if you did it in the walmart parking lot, a drill once you loosen that bottom bolt. then 12 mil for the cable. 8 mil for the three cover bolts and 14s for the contacts. contacts were big time gone...after i pulled them i went to autozone and found out no one carries them(duh). i needed the truck so i put a washer between the contact and case and moved it forward enough that it wold make contake with plunger. works like a charm. obviously im ordering a set asap...but just an fyi to get you out of a bind...if you dont mind pulling the starter again in a week. its not that scary tho
