I figured I’d make a post about my newly acquired 1989 4Runner 22RE 5 speed. I’ll keep everything in this post and update as I progress. I had to source a lot of interior parts as well as rear window (why so expensive) and untangle the horrible wiring. Here’s a few pics of when I got it. I’ll update with some new pics and mini projects. Ryan
So I’ve inquired some mismatched interior but at least it’s there and I can tweak as I go. Also put in the SR5 tach and the original steering wheel, previous was a 10” diameter auto parts store special.Used carpet for $20 that took a solid hour to get most of the stains out. Knocked off a few projects on the 4Runner. Rear pinion seal was leaking so checked that off the list. Also I took off the rear bumper in preparation for a new steel tube bumper. Ordered a bikini top and replaced the tailgate. Noticed brakes and all suspension will need to be addressed. Thankfully it’s fun to work on.
Congrats on the purchase. I've got an 89 as well. I have found it is better to look for parts that fit an 88 vs an 89 when searching for basically anything. The reason is Toyota went to the "gen 3" Pickup/Hilux model in 1989. Most parts places will list parts as fitting both 4Runners and Pickups.
Since a 1989 4Runner and a 1989 Pickup are two different generations with different body styles, panels, trim pieces, etc...it's been easier to just use 1988. In 1988 both models were the same. Before I started doing that I would sometimes get parts that would fit a 1989 Pickup, but not my 1989 4Runner.
Not sure if you're missing the cargo panels in the back, or if they are removed just to help with the wiring. If they are missing, here is a thread on making/buying some.
Great project. Someone correct me if I'm wrong, but the SR5 SR5 back seats are from an earlier 4Runner. They are sought after and you could get about $400 if they're in VGC.
I have an '89 too. You have a good basis for a build. The front interior is in pretty nice shape. Nice that your '89 matches your newer 4Runner. I painted my old white '89 to match my 2021 Tacoma.
89-4RNR-GUY nailed it about '89 parts. Just search for '88 parts. There's a bug in the parts search programs and you'll get parts for the newer 2nd gen 4Runner. If you need a rear bumper and aren't getting an offroad one, the second gen pickup step bumpers are still available and seem to fit.
