Question Initial start up problem

Trying to fire up the Runner for the first time after engine re-build.
90 Runner 4X4 3vze SR5.

With the distributor turned to the limit clockwise she wants to light up, but doesn't, any movement counter clockwise makes it worse.

I'm thinking I should move the distributor(rotor) one tooth clockwise(on the cam), do you guys concur ?

Thanks to all that have helped me since I joined this site, invaluable advice.

Hold on, after thought.

Move the rotor one tooth counter clockwise.

Here's what I've done to the motor.

Do you have a timing light? If not, return to start, do not pass go.

They're $20, and essential for almost any engine work. You'll be able to quickly determine that you're off by somewhere around 28°, which represents being off by one tooth on the distributor gear.

But you still need the timing light to set the timing; doing without will waste you days.

Think I'll test the coil and ignitor while I wait for the light to come.

I've heard of people managing to put in the distributor 180 degrees off. It will fit but be facing the wrong way. Not saying you did this, but might be worth checking. It's the easy fixes that are overlooked (speaking from experience here)...

Thanks for the suggestion, wish it was that easy.

Timing mark on vib dampener lined up with the 0 mark on timing plate, rotor pointing to the mark I made on dist body before I disassembled.

I lived in Sac for a couple years back in the late 80s, Cottage and Fulton area.

I've lived in Rocklin/Roseville for about 7 years now (came up for college) and I really enjoy it. Love being so close to the Sierras and Tahoe for snowboarding in the winter, then hiking and camping for the summer. Plus, Roseville is big enough that there's everything here and the "city" feel. I couldn't think of a better place to live since I get best of both worlds. If you watch the locations of people, you'll see quite a few from Roseville, Citrus Heights and Sac.

There's also TONS of these trucks and 4Runners on the road around here, literally hundreds of them. Lots of great trails too. I always have a steady stream of parts at the local pick and pulls, plus fun stuff to upgrade with
