I've mostly only seen mazda cams and timing done at this point. So this question might not be relevant. Bud can the cam gears be installed more than one way? I know the Miata engines have a couple different directions they can be installed. Which baffles me as to why!

The cam gears have a slot that goes over a pin. they can be installed backwards but when I pulled them off I marked them.

I did watch the video, I just don't understand if the #1 is TDC and the cams are both at the notch how it could be wrong.....I'm a cop not a tech. I only know the 4cyl. and thought how could this be much different?? what a nightmare it has turned into. The battery is dead so I'll let it sit tell tonight and give it one more shot.

YEP, take a break or it'll kick your azz. now try just flipping the timing 180 and then back and see what happens when you flip it 180, i did this and found out i was 180 off, its easy to be 180 off on the 3.slows

That's what i expected, but thought I would ask anyway.

Like everyone keeps preaching. Check that your not 180 out. Your plugs are on the right points on the distributor and your wires are lined up on the right cylinders.

lol don't give up so easily! Your timing is now perfect. That much I can see.

I would be looking at that dizzy.

btw, an engine swap would be a lot more work than this, including welding and fab work for new mounts.

DC it could be but i dont think the cams are timed right i think his cams are 18- off thats why it wont start just a though though just take the valve cover off like i said and make sure the number 1s valves are both closed on the number one and that the dizzy is right at the number one! and make sure the air flow whatsacallit is pluged in to and it should just fire right on up!

you did say your getting spark at the plugs right not just the coil?

His cams are lined up Allan. Hence why everything is lined to the match marks. Toyota doesn't put the marks there for no reason.

If the cams were 180 off, they would be pointing 180 away from the match marks. Which of course, would be wrong.

I agree!!! to bad the mods changed the title.....I was on the way to 2,000 view!!! not to bad for a thread for a motor that wont start

the mods had a good point that some ppl could get in trouble at work. Me think they should just stop working
