Head gasket and timing belt replacement....
#222
Thanks 92 toy.... I'm just ready to be done with it and hear it run. I've started school and worrying about that truck while I study all day and night isn't fun. I'll get something figured out.... I was hoping someone on here would have a way to test the ignitor directly or new a way to fix it/get one a little cheaper than $200. I feel like this is the problem, but don't want to get my hopes up. Thanks again!

What's Up? I have a 94 Yota Pickup with the Infamous 3.0, It had a blown Head Gasket and i tried to put some Stop Leak in it and the next day my Engine blew up. It burned a hol in the #1 Piston and scarred the Cylinder Wall up. I was gonna try it myself but i saved my money and took it to a shop. if you are pulling the Motor i would also recommend that you get the Block checked out as well to make sure it has no cracks, that it is flat and the Cylinder walls look good. Good luck!!!

Thanks Mike...
I've already pulled and reinstalled the engine having the block and heads inspected/worked on by the machine shop. I'm pretty sure that the ignitor is bad. I'm not working on how to locate a ignitor under $200. I'm not sure if I can use one off a similiar truck or not, but I'm going to check it out. I've just been super busy with school so it's taking me a bit.

you got a part # on that ignitor?

EDIT: you can always call Josh (aka DEATHCOUGAR...a mod on YT) at www.nix99.com
EDIT #2...this link may or may not work because it was a search.....looks like he has a few http://www.nix99.com/asp/parts/inventory.asp?t=1

yup, the part number is 89621-12010. I got two igniters from a fellow yotatech member that lives close. They weren't the same part number, but were from a 93 and 95 V6. I was told that it didn't matter that the part numbers didn't match b/c it would ohm out the same if checked. We tried both of them with no luck so it's back to square one. I'm thinking I need to test the pressure at the fuel rails. What do you guys think?

I was just reading through the last few pages of your thread and was about to suggest that. Check fuel pressure and make sure your getting fuel through those injectors. U can pick up a decent fuel pressure tester on the cheap at harbor freight. How was that regulator valve when you pulled it off the fuel rail? Are all the lines tightened back up? Did u replace te fuel filter as well? Just some thoughts in an attempt to help you get that girl running. Good luck.

Why did you think the igniter was bad? How did you determine that the "fuel pressure was low" so that you swapped out the pump?
If you're not getting any ignition pulse on the coil wire then you you've got to fix that before worrying about the fuel pressure, injectors, VAF, etc. Since any igniter that would work is not cheap, you want to run the FSM diagnosis to at least eliminate the cheap fixes.

betty - thanks for the advice, but I'm not sure of the regulator valve you're talking about. I had the injectors service, but nothing else. I plan on checking the pressure at the rails next weekend. I know I'm jumping back and forth, but I'm coming up with ideas over the week while I'm in school and trying them all over the weekend.
Scope - I ran through the FSM and checked a ton of stuff. I checked the spark and it was orange plus it didn't jump that gap distance that was specified so I checked the coil and distributor with both coming up good. I took it from there that the ignitor was bad or weak. We thought the pump wasn't kicking on after testing various things including the CO relay so we dropped the tank. We hooked up some fuel line to the pump and did a few calculations to determine flow and pressure. It seemed to be on the low end of the parameters so we swapped it out. I was fine to do it even if it wasn't bad. The fuel tank is a little bear to pull and get back in there.
Thanks for all the advice guys.... I'm hoping over this next weekend we can get it running.

Nice work, lots of fun eh. Does your vehicle start and then dies sounds like VAFM problem. When I adjusted my valves and replaced timing belt the truck would start and then die. Mine was a simple solution that the cable to the vafm was not seated properly, broke the clip which I have not replaced and it has been fine. Sound have done the cams
Your VAFM is plugged in, no holes in intake hose.
Good Luck Hans

JR - It's been a blast....
I think the VAFM is seated properly, but I'll check it again. I would think it would throw a code if it wasn't connected properly and I checked for codes, but we'll see. There doesn't seem to be any holes or leaks on the intake.
Joe - I haven't confirmed compression on all cylinders, but assumed it was good because the entire engine was gone through. I'll check that as a last resort tomorrow. I would think if the compression is low the truck would start and run, but not well. I've swapped the igniter with one from a 95 and put on a new fuel pump, but nothing is working. I didn't get to work on it last weekend, but plan on it this weekend. I'm going to try a little starting fluid to rule out spark once and for all. If this is good, I plan on checking the fuel pressure at the rails. The only other thing I can think of is some sort of strange electrical issue, but I don't know what it could be.
Thanks for all the help everyone..... Sorry, for the quick posts that are far and few between, but school is killing me right now. There are a ton of 16 hr study days and at that point everything sorta gels together and I'm not sure if I'd even make sense if I tried to post something on here...... Thanks again!!

It's alright.... You've been a big help. I haven't had much time with it since school started up. I tried the noid lights tonight and the 3 I could connect them to wouldn't light up..... any thoughts? Anyone thinking it's the ECM?..... On a brighter note, I got a really sweet whiteboard at the house. This is what I've been busy with.....

I was just getting started.... I went through glycolysis, gluconeogenesis, ETC and oxidative phosphorylation, citric acid cycle, glycogen metabolism, hormone regulation, fatty acid synthesis and oxidation, and membrane lipid biosynthesis..... naming a few.. I've got an exam on friday..
