EGR help

EGR help

1994 4Runner 3.0

Can someone explain to me what the effect of un plugging the EGR electrical connector? Everything else is connected, just the electric plug itself is disconnected. Thanks!

I assume you're referring to the EGR Gas Temp Sensor http://web.archive.org/web/201003261...00egrgaste.pdf. (The VSVs are part of the EGR system, and they have electrical connectors.)

The Gas Temp Sensor is the final check that the EGR system is successfully sending some exhaust gases to the intake manifold. If you disconnect the sensor, the ECM should throw Code 71. http://web.archive.org/web/201211190...85diagnosi.pdf

Thank you for those! Yes that would be the teMP sensor that is disconnected. Will there be any performance problems from doing that? I'm having a problem, it's just really hard for me to explain, and make sense. I was wondering if that would have something to do with it. When I get a chance I'll have to to do the CEL test. I have a scanner but I can't get a good enough connection ,or something, for my scanner to pick it up.

So I tried to really focus on what was happening so I could Des rive it. The best way I can think of to describe my problem is this. When cold, ad I pull out of my driveway in the morning it is about as peppy as a 3.0 can probably be. Very shortly after I leave the driveway, around the time it's going into second gear, it all of a sudden feels like somebody pulled a vacuum line and becomes very sluggish. It takes a long time to get up to 45 mph. This only happens when the engine is stone cold, if it's warmed up already, it's just sluggish, there is no change when I leave the driveway.

To get codes you don't need a "scanner." You need a paperclip (if your "scanner" really works on a '94, electrically it's just a paperclip anyway). http://web.archive.org/web/201211190...85diagnosi.pdf

Why are you concentrating on the EGR? What you have you done already? Have you checked ignition timing (sure sounds like that), or the ECT?

I am focusing on the EGR right now simply because the temp sensor is unplugged. I reached my hand down below to do something and ripped the wires on the wiring harness side of the plug. I haven't checked timing or anything else yet. I just got it back on the road and was wondering of that was my problem, since I know its not plugged in.

Well, pulling a code 52.

My understanding is 90% of the time it is the wires connecting to the knock sensor. Could I simply remove the connector and solder the wires together?

No. It's not the connector (usually), it's the insulation on the part of the wire beneath the lower intake manifold. It's not an expensive part, but getting to it is a chore.

If you were able to pull a code with your "service tool," the CEL should have been on.

I'm not too worried about the time it takes, I've got a weekend to do it and it's not normally my DD. It just has been lately for old times sake. I used a paper clip to get my code. I have the Snap-On Solas Ultra scan tool. For some reason it doesn't like my OBDI port. The connector has a green light that lights up when the connection is made. On my OBDI I'm getting a very dim light and my scanner says that no vehicle is detected. So, I just used the trusty paper clip and came up with a code 52.

So what exactly do I need for the KS to get this done?
