I have the stock jack and tire tools
But no spare underneath. I'm about to get new tires, so I thought I'd also get a spare rim and put one of the old tires on there for emergencies
Well... attached a pic of my underside. It seems like it's missing the part that should be on the end of the chain that holds the rim in place.
1) Should I just replace the whole assembly? Feels like it just bolts on there. Will a newer one bolt on? I'm seeing a bunch avail on ebay from 96 on. None from 1st gen. The concern with this is then the tool I have won't work, or will it? These newer ones just work with what looks like a 1/2" socket end, is that right?
2) What rim? I'm not too familiar with truck rims in general. From what I've gathered I've got the 15" high x 6" wide and 6studs 5.5 inches apart center to center, is that right? What about clearing the brakes, and depth of the wheel part. Will most 15" toyota wheels fit? Looking for a cheap online solution to this and it doesn't seem that easy to find these rims... am i looking in the wrong places?
In theory, it’s a bolt on swap. It’s going to fight you. I think I snapped all three bolts replacing mine. A new carrier is 100 dollars or so from Toyota. I run 31” 10.5”x15” tires including the spare.
You should be able to find spare wheels from a yard or remanufactured from rockauto.
i got lucky with mine, and was able to remove the three bolts, which i replaced with new. believe it or not, i used the supports for my kids' training wheels as a substitute for the wheel anchor at the end of the chain; free, and it has worked for six years now. i've got a thread on t4r.org that shows my refurb of the lifting mechanism.

O.P. You're talking about the long extension to the jack handle with a hook / loop on one end? Don't you have that anymore?

Yeah, pretty easy to find or fabricate out of a strip of steel. Junkyards are your best bet if you don't want to spend much.
I also removed mine, soaked in PB blaster, cleaned greased and re-installed.
I have a 31" on stock 15-inch steel rim, too. It gets very close to the exhaust pipe,so I use a cam-lock strap to pull it away from the exhaust pipe. I also bought the insulating wrap for exhaust pipe but I spend more time on adventures than working on truck - LOL!

Toyota lists two part numbers, 1 specifically for alloy wheels. That one is discontinued. The other part number is 51900-35121
There is one on eBay right now, don’t know which one it is or why there is one specifically for alloy wheels. I would think as long as the bolt pattern is for a 6 bolt 4WD that either one would work.

Seems to give 51900-35160 ($120)
as the part number for alloy wheels for this model (RN6#)

Looks very doable to rebuild, maybe even change the chain? The only part that I'm missing from those pics is how the 'anchor' (is that what it's called?) hooks onto the chain.
I'll restore the winch I have, but I'd like to make sure whatever I rig as an anchor works VERY well. I mean... you don't wanna drop a spare tire on the highway, right? Got any closeup pictures of how the anchor part is constructed and hooked onto the chain? be curious to see how if i can manufacture it
