22re wont start after head gasket

Its pretty much all back together besides a few vacuum lines, went to start it and wouldnt start. Made sure it had a good spark, and could smell fuel so pretty sure thats good. Messed with ignition timing alittle bit and got few back fires and figured it was ignition timing. Double checked cam and ignition timing and Im 99% sure its right on. Only thing else I can think of is if the injectors are hooked up in the wrong order, right now #1 cylinder has a white plug while the other 3 are blue. any ideas? thanks!

True, before it gets ran for more than 30 sec all the vacuum will be taken care of. I just want to make sure it is going to run before everything gets put all back together. thanks!

You must have the vacuum lines hooked up and the intake complete. If the MAF sensor is not hooked up (air box) then it will not run. The engine must see air flow into the engine or it will not start.

I'm with subliminal. If you are getting back fires you are most likely 180* out. I speak from experience 2x's. It may look right but it's not. Also check the valve clearence. .08 in .12 ex, had that problem also, the valves were to tight and were not allowing full compression.

Im now sure cam timing is right on, I know piston #1 is at TDC and the cam is between the intake and exhuast lobes. I will check the valve clearence tonight.

ok first off I know this thread is older than my kids... but I was in the same boat after my head gasket replacement. perfect timing, strong spark, I was getting air, still not firing. I reset the valve clearance and viola... started right up. if anyone else reads this post after a head gasket replacement with same issue make sure you check the valve clearance.

An thankyou PirateFins

Reviving this from the dead to add my experience as well.

Just finished a headgasket and couldn't get it to start. Ended up needing a valve adjustment! That's it!
