High Pinion front carrier install questions.

I've recently purchased a high pinion front carrier with an e-locker and a rear e-locker that I'm planning to put in my 85 4Runner. I'm not planning to put a lift on it right away since I just spent my lift money getting an e-locker for the front and rear. Anyway, I don't think that the front hp will work without a lift, but I am not certain and would prefer not to use the trial and error method to make certain. So here are my questions...

1. Does anyone know for sure if a lift is needed for a high pinion install? If no lift is needed will I need any drive shaft mods?

2. Will the front housing need to be modified like the rears do when e-lockers are installed?

3. Will I need to complete any drive shaft modifications once I install a TG 4" lift along with the high pinion front? (in the future)

Thanks

When i bought my new complete third members from marlin crawler, i bought a high pinion for the rear and was going to get a high pinion for the front, but they recomended against it and it wouldn`t be covered under warranty if i bought it anyway. I can`t remember why they said don`t run a high pinion in the front, but there must be a good reason if it will void the warranty. I might be a good idea to call marlin crawler and get there opinion, it might keep you from breaking something expensive down the road.

High pinion is fine for the front, you just want to avoid using it in the rear, unless you have a very light rig, like a buggy. Why? The HP has reverse cut gears, making it strong up front but in the back, you would be running the gears on the weaker coast side and that makes it like 30% weaker than a low pinion diff. Marlin broke 2 sets of R&P gears on a rear HP, and I should know because I have that very diff that I had him set up for my front axle when he decided to ditch the rear HP application.

1. A HP diff should work w/o a lift, pinion will be ~4" higher than it is now, so check your shaft clearance with the passenger front wheel stuffed.

2. Same housing mods for an e-locker, front or rear.

3. Shaft may need to be lengthened and/or a longer slip yoke installed with the new front springs. Maybe not as much of either as would be needed with a LP diff, but probably still need to be done. You will have a better pinion angle in any event.

i'v heard a high pinion 3rd in the front is stronger. it has something to do with the pinion being on the drive or the coast side of the ring gear.

You have those backwards. Fine for the front, bad for the back.

Although they do take similar axle modifications, they are not identical. Buy the gasket for the high pinion and use it for the front modifications. Buy the gasket for the rear TRD elocker and use that one for the rear modifications.

I researched this modification to death and really wanted to go Hi-pinion in the front but I also wanted 4.56 gears and you can only buy them with 4.10 gearing (unless they have been regeared already). I finally went with two TRD elockers in 4.56 gearing. I used an FZJ80 elocker ECU and switch to control mine, FWIW.

Thanks for all the info guys. My lp for the rear got here today. Brand new in the Toyota box for 300 bucks. The hp should be here next week. I'm regearing them to 4.88's as I plan to run 33's with the tg lift... eventually. Not sure what size tg lift I should use to make them fit. Also planning on a doubler when I install the lift too, but I've got to rob a bank first or my wife is gonna kill me.

You might want to look at http://www.marlincrawler.com for your lift or research rears up front. The quality of Trail Gears leaf springs are not the best in the world.
O and if you really have a source to buy $300 elocker differentials delete this thread immediately and start selling them in the for sale section for a markup

My high pinion with locker is on the way. 550 plus shipping. Now I gotta buy the 4.88's front and rear, crush sleeve eliminators, shims, and pinion seals. I'll post some pics if I can figure out how. Any tips on where to find a good deal on those items?
