Is it making a lot of noise from the gearbox or what? I think these trucks are worth at least a junkyard replacement gear box, if it comes to that. I want to rebuild mine.

Yeah I think a better description would help. From your post, I'm not even sure I'd call this a tranny problem. Hard to say exactly what you're getting at, but it sounds like a combination of possibly being undergeared for your tire size, possible need of a tune up, and driveshaft out of phase.

But not knowing even the basics about your truck, it's hard to say...what's your tire size? Stock engine? How many miles? What have you done to it lately? Is it new to you? etc etc etc

It's not complicated, it's just a pain. Search, it's definitely been gone over before.

Basics: get a friend, or two. Remove driveshafts, remove clutch slave cylinder, disconnect electrical (reverse light, 4wd indicator), remove all the bellhousing bolts, including the ones in the starter, get under it, or get a jack under it, and remove the crossmember and drop the whole thing. the other way would be all the first stuff, but don't take out all the bellhousing bolts until you unbolt the crossmember from the t-case. Get the crossmember out, then get under there (two under there is better), and have someone get the bellhousing bolts out, then drop it all.

You'll need a couple people under there, gently (or not so gently..) rocking the whole tranny back & forth to get the seal to break. You'll know when it does. Pull it back (towards back of truck) when you can feel that it's broken free. You need to get the input shaft out of the clutch. Then gently lower it to the ground.

Get a good clutch, not a autozone one.

Learn how to use the clutch centering tool. Simple, but important.

Hook everything back up.

Oh, and get the flywheel resurfaced while you're in there.

It's a pretty crappy job the first few times...after my...probably 5th time doing it, it went super smooth and I wondered why I used to complain about it so much, but it's just a heavy piece to have to be working with. It's also the first major work I had ever done on my truck. Get someone to help you who has done it before.

Oh, and "not very mechanical" and "first generation toyota truck owner" (you never mentioned what year your truck is...), don't really go together, unless you have a lot of money to be handing over to mechanics.

Well, just do a little research on what brands are good. I'm guessing you can get a good one through autozone, just don't get whichever one they would have on the shelf. LUK are good, and I believe are often OEM. Marlin Crawler has a really good clutch. Those are the only two I really know of, but if you do some searching, you may find more. A lot of shops won't let you hand them your own part, though. You might be able to ask that they use OEM quality parts, but I doubt they'd take a part you bought and put it in the truck. Most won't, anyways.
