85 Speedo drive question

My 85 has long ago lost it's speedo. The cable seems fine. On removing the mechanical drive from the transmission the nylon gear appears visually OK but I cannot see the corresponding gear inside the tranny. Can some one tell me if the gear in the tranny is steel or if it is also nylon? If its steel I will take a flyer and try a new drive, (if I can find one). If it is also nylon/plastic then it may have to wait until the next clutch change when I can get to the tranny in relative comfort. Any input on this would be most welcome.
