changed the brakes today, they work great, engine wont idle at proper rpm, have to pour gas to get her back started, drives great,a little slow to get to 50 mph.
im thinking carb problems or weak fuel pump.

whats your thoughts?

couldnt resist, went off-roading today in the marsh, sank a few times...but pulled out ok.
put another 30 miles on her today aswell.
the marsh mud down here is brutal, soft .....when my 600 lb 500 foreman gets stuck it takes forever to work itself out, couldnt imagine pulling this rig out on my own.
i stayed within 100 ft of the treeline,i have 140 ft of winch cable...lol.
but i have literally miles of marsh to ride in.....just no trees out there.
people here dont ride the marsh for a reason...lol.
we are only 3 ft above sea level,so the ground stays soft and sloppy year round, gets a little harder during the winter...thats when ill go play.

ive changed the fuel pump, still wont run in idle, pour gas in the carb to get her started,if she dies, she wont start back up untill i pour more gas.at high idle she will stay running all day.the accelerator pump is froze up,the choke is not operating,im looking at tearing down the carb soon,i think its giving me my troubles.

today i put about 80 more miles on her,i left her running everytime i stopped somewhere.
i went buy a carb rebuild kit,and went see a guy in my town that used to have 12-15 first gen yotas lying around years ago, turns out he junked all his yotas, parted them out ect.
he says he never had a body that lasted over 5 years without falling apart.
we have bad salt water humidity here, being yotas are so light and thin....you get the idea....but he does have a few clean 81 tittles that he will locate, with the possibility of a cab lying around in a warehouse.

on my way home she died on me....would just sputter than die again, had the wife go buy me a new fuel pump.
installed it....fired right up,drove home the remaining 10 miles.i get home, lower the idle....idled smooth for 5 mins.then i stop it to see how easy it fired back up.....nothing but click......click,volt meter showing barely 12 volts.....damn the bad luck!

figured the battery problem out....hot wire came out the battery clamp....easy fix!
adjusted the idle, went ride for 30 mins, everything was fine.let her idle in the driveway, after 2 mins of idle she diesd....like i turned the key off, wont fire back up.

gonna rebuild that carb,or intstall the weber soon.

I wouldn't say that Weber is a "fix", but for sure it's an upgrade, and will eliminate one more variable. Good luck!

been driving her about 30-40 miles a day, every now and then she will idle rough for a few min and die.
i have a carb rebuild kit, just havent had time to install it.
shes burning a lil oil,not much but some light smoke on high rpms.
shes also puffing light black smoke....im guessing due to the carb issue.
but overall shes good to me...in need of a regear though.
tops out at about 65-70 mph,0-55 is pretty decent, but past that is slow...not even worth trying.
so i guess the interstate isnt in my plans...lol.

Well I hope that before long you can change the frowny-face on this thread to something else, so we don't have to see "my toyota experience begins" be associated with being sad!

Ill change that frown soon enough...lol, i cant do it from my iphone though.
Im happy with it, the frown was because my sale sounded too good to be true.... And it was. I still got a great deal, but not as good of a deal as the seller stated.

I just saw a 87 yota diwn in my area with 31's, original paint scheme with stripes, but the body was falling apart.... So id say i got a great deal with little rust/rot.

im actually considering selling this rig to fund my 93 4x4 conversion ext cab yota.
i enjoy driving the first gen,but im dying to get started on my build.
but i do relize how hard it is to get a non rotten early 80's yota down here.
hard choice.

As with most things brother it's priorities. At this stage which do you want more? Personally if it were me I'd get things rolling with your other project truck but that because I like that sort of stuff. Ultimately it's something only you can decide for yourself, otherwise you won't be happy.

By the time you put all the effort and money into the conversion on the '93, you could have a real nice first gen that will do the same thing.....just my opinion tho.

both very good points.
im a project man myself,i guess me being impatient is to blame for the thought of selling the first gen to fund the 93 project.

after thinking real hard, ill just sit on what i have, maybe by tax time ill have enough cash saved up to start the project.

estimated cost.
sas kit $1300
used 93 4x4 auto tranny $200-$500
rear leaf/lift to match the front $300
gear set f/r $600
twin stacked gear cases $700-$1000
tires and rims $1000-$1300

im confident i can get all that for $4000 or less if i shop right.

thanx for steering me straight.
after that it will be axel reconditioning,brakes....ect.
eventually winchs and bumpers ect.

my local academy sports had the pelican 8 ft bass fisher on clerance for $299....because it was stored outside, had little mildew on the floor, and the swivel seats....needed oil to swivel.

so needless to say i picked up the boat, headed to walmart for a $120 30lb minkota.
at home i had 2 salvaged deep cycle batteries, and a solar panel with voltage regulator....expensive....but i get them free all the time.

so with both batteries, and solar panel....i should get a full 12 hours of riding/fishing from this rig.
plus it fits perfect in the back of my 82 long bed.boat weights in at 87lbs,fully loaded im looking at about 200 lbs.

total cost for me to ride!
$445
cant wait to hit the water tomorrow!
