my toyota experience begins!
yesterday i bought 2 toyota 4x4's off of craigs list.
seller listed the ad as 2/92 toyota 4x4's $2500
both run great with winch and spare parts.
i contacted the seller and asked condition,the reply was great condition....no rust or rot.we then spoke on the phone,and they sent a few pics.one camo 82 yota with 33 swampers,the other a running parts truck...flatbed 81 yota that also drives great.
after the pics i asked if the camo yota would make a 200 mile drive,seller stated.....no problem.nothing was wrong with the truck,just needed to put a water hose back on the truck.
i arranged a day off of work to go pull out a loan,and pay for the trucks,drive atleast 1 of em home with me,arranged to leave the other truck there for 2 more weeks (my scheduled time off)
heres the pics i recieved.
long story short.....i get there the seller is drinking,we talk about the trucks,he states they have both been good to him.never had to work or wrench on them.
so i said lets hear the camo one run,i installed the water pipe that was off,toped of the radiator,put in a fresh battery,added a 1qt of oil,brake fluid,clutch fluid.poured a little gas into the carb.....10 second of cranking she fired up.at that time i noticed large quanities of white smoke pouring out the exhaust.i asked....does it always smoke?
he says....no....its been laid up since febuary,when deer season closed.he then states when he last ran it,she had a water leak between the head and block....a slow leak....i forgot to mention it.
i looked it over,the pump to pipe hose had hole in it,spraying water all over he block/head area...i thought no problem,cheap fix.
adjusted the fuelmix,smoke cleared up.
at that point another guy stoped by and offered $3000 just for camo truck...so i made a move and said ill take it,lets go do the paper work.i quickly made sure the clutch worked and headed out to the notary.
after paying the guy,and the notary i stopped at napa,got the hose.installed it....ran beautiful for 20 mins in his yard.
he insisted i let him drive for the test drive...no problem.
1/2 mile later we were over heated on the side of the road with busted radiator.we assumed stuck thermostat.
cooled it off,droveback to his house,went buy the thermostat and some stop leak.installed it,ran fine for 1 hour in the yard.1/4 mile down the road...you guessed it.....hot!
this time i drove alone,clutch felt great,shifted smooth,lots of power.brakes were crappy....running on manual,no power assist.but hearing those tires hum at 50 mph was a beautiful feeling.
i laced into the seller for lying,he worked on it and knew of the problems,the clutch fan was new,he knew something was up with the cooling system,i asked ...hows the brakes...his reply...great!
short story...trucks are under my name and paid for...sittin at his house for 2 more weeks till i get off work.
still worth the money in my opion!
either the cooling system is clogged bad,or blown gasket/cracked head combo....but she purs like a kitten,no water in oil,or oil in water.
but with radiator cap off water spills out when cranking
as his beer cans pilled up,he admitted he only ran the flatbed for 2 mins to see if it ran,never drove it,and the fuel tank needed cleaning....full of rust and water,no key,no passenger door widow,busted up dash....ect....to add to it...it as a mississippi tittle that had never been transferd to his name....so double tittle transfer fee's for me.
were in louisiana,so i have to pay ms taxas too.
nice deal right!
its worth it to me for a solid rolling chasis and body with spare drivetrain.

FYI-when you use a tow dolley-be sure to pull the rear drive shaft.
The TC isn't lubricated properly with the rear shaft spinning and TC lever in neutral. Plus you run the risk of it slipping in gear... I have personal experience with that happening and destroying a transmission/TC.

I did put the case in nuetral, but left the driveshaft.
When the driveshaft spins, so does the gears in the case. Those gears(while spinning) carry oil up to the rest of the gears and bearings in the case.
Oil transfers from 1 gear to the next.
As a precaution i also drove her around in 4wd for 5 mins before putting her on the dolly, to help lube up everything.

thanx for the t case lesson guys!
i was not aware of the design.
i just drove it for about 1 hour,ive determined i need to pull the head.
runs flawless with radiator cap in vent position,but when i close the cap properly smoke starts bellowing out the exhaust.once she warms up really good the throttle response is weak.
at this point it could be either the head gasket or head,or both.
im fearing the head because she runs worse as she warms up....due to metal expanding when heated....a tiny crack would open.
but still not getting water in the oil,or vise versa.
im assuming i have the rf1a t case
L45 4 speed tranny

im in houma la,picked the trucks in livingston la.
thanx bro!
cant wait to get the flatbed home.
im thinking my mitsubishi turbo diesel from my 87 ranger may fit under the hood.......basically a toy!
my have to get an adapter plate built.

i just picked up a 2000 kawasaki prarie 4x4 from centerville from a friend of mine.about 2.5 hour drive from houma.
nice to see a fellow yota guy her in la.

Yea cuz Toyota's are like gold down here.... especially a month or so before hunting season....let me know if you need any parts I have a little stash built up at the house. I love the bumper too by the way.

tonight i got under there with a paint suit and a water hose,trying to soften up that mud.
most of the surface rust washes up with the mud.
i did run out like a little girl when 8-10 wasp came out the frame while i was under there....lol.

my co-workers are making fun of me because i paid $2500 for 2 trucks....and none of them run.
they dont understand the worth of the drivetrain,and a yota thats not rusted out.
im happy with my deal.

maybe some good news!
ive pulled the carb and intake,the intake gasket between the #1 intake valve. water port and #2 intake valve was washed out.
this allows water from the water inlet to enter #1 + #2 intake valves.
there is still antifreeze sitting ontop the intake valves.
ill still pull the head,that way i know what ive got,and do a ndt crack test,check for warpage....ect....along with some pm work.
ive ordered the rock head gasket set.....is the supplied head gasket any good?
also does the rock set come with the exhaust gasket set?

my hour of happenies is over,ive pulled the valve cover.....the oil is now gray.
for the past few days the oil stayed black....untill today.
so im still praying on the head gasket being blown too....but im leaning towards the head.

Tomorrow evening ill pull the head and timing setup.
Ill know more by then.
Ive got to get up for work in 6 hours.....lol.
also the 2 bbl is wired closed,just the one small barrel working.
so carb rebuild is in the future,changing all vaccum lines,along with all rubber under the hood.
i did find some rot and bad rust beneeth the battery.
this 22r has the dual timming chain.
heres a few pics!
