hi steer question

i don't have power steering on my 81, and i've looked at tons of info, but haven't seen anything about whether I need power steering in order to use an IFS steering box. I've been thinking about it, and I don't think I would, but am I missing something?

Thanks

You need power steering for the IFS box. Being an 81 I'm assuming 22R? Hit the junkyard and snag a PS pump, lines, and reservoir off a PS equipped 22R(E).

Also to run hi-steer, your going to need at least a 3" lift to clear everything.

Toyota made a manual steering gear box in the IFS style, but why waste your time just get the stuff to upgrade to powersteering.

I have power steering high steer with 36 swmapers and I can easily with one palm on the wheel pull a u-turn in an intersection.

I ran that manual steer set up too bigger tires, manual steering = big biceps and forearms, not to forget the finger bruises you will get when you go off road

thanks...just wasn't sure about the steering boxes used. i have some lift, the truck was lifted when i got it, but i don't know how much. i'll have to measure against the stock specs. so the power steering setup off an 22RE will work? the junk yards around here don't have any 4wd toyota trucks, much less first gen trucks. i'll have to look farther away.

thanks again

IFS box 86-95, I used a box from a '94 has a quicker ratio than some of the earlier IFS boxes.

x2 on the quick ratio, I upgraded to one on my 87 4Runner, not a huge difference but most def. noticeable and comes in handy.

sorry to hijack this thread, but I would rather not start a new one. and couldn't find the answer in a search....

I already have power steering in my 85, with 85 steering gear box. When I switch to the newer IFS gear box, do I need to get the new powering steering pump, or is my stock one going to just hook up?

And also, on the whether or not you NEED power steering to run high steer. heavens no. I ran my rig for a week without the pump when I blew (yes it literally exploded.) the pressure side power steering line. Just capped the ports into the steering box after filling it and drove the thing.
