Not sure, there is likely some minor internal difference that maybe only Marlin knows. Model year will tell you what is should have been:

I had a W56A in my '85 originally and had a rebuilt W56B installed and it fits and works fine.

Normally manual transmissions are non-synchromesh in reverse:

Not sure on the W56, but it is likely non-synchro in reverse. Could be any number of things causing reverse to not work. Likely all would require opening up the transmission to diagnose the problem, although a good transmission guy might be able to figure it out externally.
I had a problem with 2nd gear on my rebuilt W56B. 2nd gear slipped out of position on the shaft and caused to to be nearly impossible to shift into. The guy at the shop hopped in and he actually made it shift fine, but said the gear had slipped. Some of the gears are tight interference-fits on the shafts and if the gear bore is too large for the shaft OD, it will not fit tight enough and will slip, like mine did. They pulled the tranny out, cracked it open and pressed on a tighter 2nd gear and it has been fine for 16+ years now.

Okay that helps a lot thanks. I just thought it seemed like a synchronizer was stripped because it pops right out of reverse and I've already began tearing into it to find out what it could be
