impact guns?

I have a 650ft/lb impact gun, love it. i have never broken a bolt when using an impact gun. i have broken many by hand. I am trying to get some body mounts off, and they a rusted in good. my impact gun will not get them out, and i know if i stick a rachet on there, i'll break it(which i can't do)

so my question is, if i was to rent a bigger impact gun, do you think this will help? have any of you guys ever broken bolts with an impact gun? what size gun should i rent? what are some other tips to get these bolts out? (the nuts are not accessable, so i can't heat them, and can't cut them.) TIA :tim

I have broken many bolts with my impact, with pretty much the same rating as yours. Dont know what you are feeding it with, but if your compressor is to small and doesnt flow the CFM the gun needs, you wont be getting full power out of it.

Like the other guys, I have broken many bolts with an impact. If the wrench you are holding them with is vibrating (like holding it with your hand and having it shake around) it will take quite a bit of the power and impact action away from the impact. Let the holding wrench come up against something solid. Sometimes that can make a difference. Like Joez said, make sure it is getting a full volume of air.

If the bolts have nuts on them, why not break them? Even if they are threaded into the frame or something, you may end up breaking them and just dealing with a broken bolt. I have removed MANY brokem bolts too.

keep in mind any extensions or swivels you add between the gun and the socket detract form your torque numbers.
