I initially ran my rear springs with only 2" longer than stock front spring shackles on my '85:

You could lengthen the front shaft with a spacer, however, the larger issue is that with the added travel (droop) of the rear springs, you'll likely pull the stick slip yoke apart unless you run limit straps. You need something with 6"-7" of slip up front with the rear springs.

I've generally paid around $300 with a useable core shaft. Highangledriveline is one place to look or check for a local driveline shop. Lengthening cost varies as it depends on how long you need the shaft to be. To lengthen, you generally cut off all the tube and re-tube with new material, so adding 2" doesn't mean you only buy 2" of new tubing, you might be buying 20" or whatever length the shaft needs to be. Keep is mind that if you use your 4x4 during the winter (IE: driving to a ski resort) at more than 20 mph or so square driveshafts have a tendency to vibrate like crazy. Part of the expense of having a Drive shaft shop do the work is that they (should) balance the shaft.

the hard part about balancing the square shaft is the inaccurate tollerance in the slip caused the drive shaft's geometry to change as the drive shaft spins. so unless you can get thet thing really close tolerances balancing wont do anything

not always the case... i have a square front drive shaft. it vibrates a very little bit between 45-55mph and then smooths out again by 60. when i bent my rear drive line and had to drive it home in front wheel drive it was smooth sailing even at 70mph. my only complaint about it is that if you have the hubs locked but not in 4wd, or your in 4lo and dont have the hubs locked, it makes a clanking noise. other than that no problems.
