Makes a great place to store spare belts, hoses, winch extension rope and other items that are handy to have but not used very often (since you would need to unpack the back of the truck to open the seats on a long trip).

there are seats out there that just bolt into the bolt holes with no upper brackets. I think they were a dealer installed item. I had one in my 4runner but it was tore up from car seats (P.O.). These seats kinda suck though because they do not fold up. I tossed my seat bought a rear seat delete panel from a local guy for..........$50.

Sorry to revive an old thread, but I had this conversation with my son today. On my 1986 4Runner, I am the original owner of it and its awaiting me to rebuild. When i purchased it brand new from my buddy who owned the Toyota dealer down here in south Florida he told me that the truck is arriving from Jacksonville without rear seats. He said the seats would be added later as the truck was imported as a pickup truck to reduce import tax. This is what I was told in 1986 by my friend who owned the dealership here in South Florida before retiring from that business.
By the way after they installed the seats, they left the same rear plate which is originally from japan not an after market piece fabricated in here in the US. I still have this rear cargo bed piece and it worked out very good at the time when we loaded stuff Boxes, Lumber, etc.. it keep it from sliding forward into the front seats.
The 1987 4Runner which I just purchased and rebuilding currently has the rear seats and is a SR5, but upon taking out the seats and re-welding the pieces back together this was not a factory install, but can be seen as a dealer installed.
