87 4runner Rear Seat

My new to me 87 4runner came without a set of rear seats. It's not that the PO took them out, it never had them. Instead it has a formed, hinged piece of sheet metal that can be folded up to protect the front seats from cargo in the back. Seems to all be factory, as the hinges bolt into factory nuts on the body, and its all the same paint color as the rest of the body.

Not bad really, but I want some rear seats. Question is will a standard Gen 1 4runner rear seat setup bolt in here, or did Toyota make different sheet metal for the 4runners without the rear seat option? I've not found a junk yard that really knows the answer, and was hoping someone here may have run into this before.

TIA

Yes, a set of stock seats will bolt in there. You will of course need all the hardware, and the upper seat brackets and such.

And don't just toss that metal piece, that cargo plate is worth some $$$ to the right people.

X2. I looked and looked for one of those plates before finally giving up. Lots of folks want them so don't just toss it.

Thanks.

Will have the plate for sale soon here. (in the Denver-Boulder area, probably not a shippable item).

If I was in Colorado, I would trade you my rear seats for that cargo cover.

Dang the luck

Well I got some pics of the cargo plate, in place, before I took it out. Unfortunately I can't figure out how to get the pics uploaded to the gallery here so I can add them to a post; just isn't an add or upload button on the my gallery page like the instructions say. If anyone can clue me in how to do it that would be great.

Will post in the for sale area once I can figure out how to get the pics up here.

I've found it's easiest to upload photos to photobucket or some other photo site like that, then just add the image code to your post.

I just picked one up and traded a guy for his rear seat which was in great shape.

From the front, you can see it uses the outer 2 of the 4 mounting holes.

from the back. everything lines up to make it a flat piece back there.

Yup, just like mine, only mine's white (with no rust but a few small screw holes probably from some mounted speakers at some point).

When folded down, it levels out the floor dip where the rear seats go, so you get a bit more flat floor in the rear. When up it has the big side vertical and protects the rear of the front seats from stuff sliding into them. The big side is shaped like that so that it just clears the rear wheel wells when folded down. A sweet design, if that's what you're looking for.

I contemplated keeping it. Just throw some paint on it. But every once in a while more then one passenger needs a ride, so I traded.

But they are pretty cool.

FYI. *SOME* 1st gen 4 runners came to the u.s. with those plates. That way it was imported as a pickup rather then passenger vehicle. Less taxes. Dealers would then install the rear seat to make it an suv. this was more common in the early 1st gen 4runner years. Most of those plates ended up in the trash I'm sure. Too bad too.

This is not true.

Many came with seats, especially the SR5 versions. Especially in the 88-89 model years.

I should have been more specific. It was 84 to 86. I've read that a few times.

Still not true.

At minimum, loaded SR5 and Turbo 4Runners had full interiors when they came over here. They merely cost more.
