In trying to find Mobil 1 gear oil around here....no one has it in 80w/90
only 75w/90 -
am I cool to run that in the rear dif? I'm in MO...it DOES get pretty cold here....and I did notice the write-up on BOBSR5's site says 80w/90 in the rear....so??

I'm running Amsoil 75W-90 in the Front/Rear Diffs, Transfer Case, & Manual Tranny. No problems what so ever. Shifts much smoother in the winter with this Gear Lube.

I dont think Mobil1 makes 80w/90, but Amsoil sure does. You can find info about it on their site, go here:

Bob's write-up says he used this Amsoil 80w/90 (AGL-QT), which you can find on the above link for 7.65 / qt

 

I've been using the M1 75w90 for mine, so far no problems.

 

I run the RedLine Heavy Shockproof Oil in my Front & Rear axles and the Redline Mt-90 in my tranny & transfer. Great stuff!

 

Not to hi-jack the thread, but can you just switch to the synthetic stuff w/o a problem? I know in motor oil there are problems sometimes.

Also, how did y'all get those darn fill and drain plugs off? I think they are 24mm, and I've been PB blastin um, but they are not budging.

 

PB Blast the HELL out of them, and when you try to loosen the plug, you need to crack it. So hit the wrench with a hammer, should work. A few of the plugs there is not much room at all to play with, in which case I just politely ask them plugs to remove themselves from thy holes, and they abide

 

i've had to go to my mechanic to have him remove a siezed drain plug from my rear diff. talk about a PITA for me, i wish i had an air chisel at my disposal...

 

The last time I changed mine I had to use an impact wrench. I had painted my rear diff and the paint must have like glued the plugs in place. The fill plug got mangled enough I had to replace it. BTW always remove the fill plug first, just in case you can't get it off you'll know before you drain all the gear oil out. The impact wrench made a real mess with the drain plug too, I was trying to just loosen it and then remove it by hand but the damn thing spins so fast it was out in an instant and oil poured all over the garage floor before I could get the drain pan in place.

 

Ok, well now I feel better. I was feeling like the govenator says "a girlyman" I tried being nice and asking the plugs to exit the holes, yet they are not listening. I guess it'll be no more Mr. Nice guy and I'll have to break out the Impact wrench and get some replacements just in case!

 

I changed mine today.
I used Valvoline High performance 80/90 gear oil.
I also put some Nulon addititive in the auto trans as well for the hell of it,& it made quite a differance . I need to get the auto flushed soon as it getting a bit stiff & noisy, but i was amazed how well that stuff works on my tired old transmission.

 

heat the plug up with a torch.... they expand and then you put the torch down to grab the wrench it starts cooling at this time you can shock it off...

 

were you able to find your redline locally or did you have to order it online? Just wondering because I have never seen it stocked.

Its usually available locally, check Redline's dealer page. I found a local race shop that sells it cheap, especially if you get a case. My local Toyota dealer carries it, too, as do many of the local (non-chain) auto parts stores.

I bought the Redline online at www.summitracing.com , I think it was $8 something, a real good price!
