Setting Correct Miles on Inst. cluster
I just got a used PreTaco cluster w/tach to replace my tachless (tactless, heh heh - oh, uhh...nevermind) one. My gas gauge is screwy and I think its from me screwing with it, so this is my attempt at a fix...plus I was looking for and excuse to buy a cluster with a tach 
ANYWAY, I'm trying to not commit fraud with this, so can somebody tell what kind of place would have the equip to set the digital odo on the replacement cluster to correct mileage? Called a dealer and he ran some madness about having to send both units to the factory....

Actually, he may be right. It isn't an issue of connecting it to a computer and re-programming it. It's an issue of connecting it to a signal generator and setting the number of pulses very high (so it doesn't take weeks) and actually running the miles around - just like you might do with a mechanical odo. The factory, for example, can pre-register miles on a replacement odometer this way. We sometimes order speedo clusters (from Ford) with correct mileage preregistered.

I replaced the cluster in my F150 (Canadian truck changing to US) and disassembled the mechanical odometer and reset it to the correct miles. It wasn't easy, they are supposed to be tamperproof...

unfortunately this one's digital....I was hoping the '98's would bo the roller type. Alas, 'twas not. Would've gotten a '97 but my understanding is that the cable is different.

Odd.. I guess some 98's are digital some are not. My dad's is analog type... built in late 98 I believe, because he bought it new in early 99.

If anybody ever needs digital odometer reset (for legitimate reasons), I found this company in Texas.

It wasn't cheap, but he was the lowest I found and he got the piece on its way back to me ASAP.
I have tach now!!!!!!! (needle still stops at 1/8th tank, though ????)
