Replaced clicking starter- No click, No start now.

1990 3vze 4runner

Starter was clicking yesterday and wouldn't start. Brand new battery. Was running fine until I wanted to pull it into the garage to rebuild my rear differential. Go figure.

After some wrestling, I got the old one out and the new one in just a bit ago. Everything is just as it was, I swear.

Turn the key, no click. All my lights work. Everything seems as it was- no left over parts at least!

Did I miss something? SOS

Jumped the E1 and Te1 terminals to get the code and both my check engine and OD lights are blinking fast and constant. Never seen it do that before.

Auto Trans in neutral or Park??

Poor connection at the Solenoid

Only the MT have the Starter Relay

I did not test it myself. It came with its test results from the rebuild. Attached here:

I bought it from Oreilly.

Automatic tranny. It's in park.

what would cause a bad connection at the solenoid? I attached the black wire via clip, and the red (power) cable on the bolt post. It's not SUPER tight, but its snug and not going anywhere.

thanks for your help, man.

Google image of the first starter I found. I put colored arrows corresponding to where I tied my wire/plug in.

Cool.
Illustrated posts below...
Check if starter solenoid and starter motor are working:

Check if your starter relay is wired properly:

Yes, Toyota wired a few models wrong at the factory:

Also, when in park and you try to crank, do you get voltage here? exactly how much?

Get out your multimeter (don't have one? No excuse for that! https://www.harborfreight.com/7-func...ter-63604.html)

First, check your battery voltage (an easy sanity check that you're using the meter correctly.) Should be about 12.6v. Next, check for voltage from the bolt on the starter to the case of the starter. Should be battery voltage all the time (so be careful you don't short that bolt to anything!) Next, disconnect the solenoid wire (which I think is the "black" one on yours). Have someone turn the key to start; you should have battery voltage to ground from the wire then.

Everything good? Get a piece of wire (anything heavier than 20ga), connect it to the spade terminal for the solenoid (where the "black" wire went). Then touch it to the plus terminal of the battery. The engine should turn over.

Starter is good. See attached testing...

the battery was a little low, but not enough to keep it from cranking (my opinion)... so it's been on a trickle since about 2. I'll be checking on it at 430 (EST).

How do you know? What are your measures for little low but not enough?

I would not Trust but for sure Verify !!

Unless your a friend of the person that rebuilt that starter or signed the test results !

I can give you many of those papers stating alternators and starters tested good that failed out of the box.

Good luck finding your problem.

A friend of mine works at oreilly. He tested both my starter and battery in front of me. They're good.

I reinstalled both items, same as before. Now I have a series of relay clicks under my hood, by the fuse panel.

Someone is turning the key to the "on" position for this. When turned to "start', other than cycling through these clicks, it does nothing.

Just a quick message while my coffee works its magic...

When I put my new starter in (the first time) and it didnt even click... I burst into tears. I love my truck. Really.

So, thanks for taking time out of your day (all of you) to help me with Bertha.

LOL! Tnx.
Pls share which ground.
Also, what did u find out about the starter relay wiring? We're always trying to find out which model-years were wired right or wrong because there are so many variations.
