running rich and i dont know why

Hey guys, i got a carbed 84. Its running rich as heck and i dont know why. Ive adjusted the idle mixture to only 2 turns out. the only way i can get it not to smoke it to lean it out to 1 turn. I just bought new plugs, wires, dist, and rotor. the blue smoke seems to have cleared up a bit, but at times itll idle low and run rich as heck.

also im getting alooot of carbon build up on the plugs. Before i changed them earlier today, i took the old ones out. I brightened them up with a wire brush to new (they only had 1000 miles on them.) Put them in, took a 2 miles trip around the block and when i pulled them to put the new ones int hey had a loooaaadd of carbon already.

I posted a comment about your rich running carb in your other thread:

I used to have a pic, but dont anymore. Your Auxilary Air Pump (AAP) may have a defective diaphram. Your AAP is on the carb, (low, front driver side, under the fuel inlet hose). Pull that little vacuum hose and plug both ends.

In the old days, shade tree mechanics would simply put a BB in the hose to block the vacuum, and called this a 2 cent tune-up.

I bet this fixes your issue. It did mine.

This AAP engages when your truck is cold, adding extra fuel to the mix to smooth the idle until the truck warms up. Yours, like mine, is adding fuel all the time now.

Give it a shot. Simple to do, don't cost anything. You really only need this AAP in a COLD climate environment. I live in Phoenix. Went without it for years on my '85 with no probs.

Good luck.

PS, my money says that if you drove the truck until fully warm, shut it down for a few mins, fired it back up, she would run about normal again.
And, my money says the the front spark plug has way more black soot on it than the other 3....

I have always had problems with the stock carb. I am SURE someone with alot more factory carb experience can probably do better than me at tuning it.

I have sold every stock carb I have ever got (on a truck) on Ebay and put the money into a Weber 32/36 DGEV (seen them on Ebay for about $300 for a new kit).

The Weber takes me about 30 minutes to install and tune and the performance has always impressed me.
Seems there are always people out there wanting to buy the stockers and I never had any problem getting about $100 for them on Ebay.

Plus it simplifies removing most of the smog equipment, which in my opinion, just screws things up even worse.

Yea Yodaforce your right! I got a buddy digging me out one of his old webbers right now, he replaced it due to rough idle when all he had was a vacuum leak. So looks like this ol' boy lucked out on a webber...BTW Staceman1 this is a picture of my carb. The black fuel line coming off the pump is on top. Is the AAP the tan line underneath it?

Yep.
Just pull that little hose and plug it. It's just a vacuum line.
