Whining from Speakers, Rough Idle, Check Engine

90 4Runner - 22re - 5 speed - 4x4

Past few days I have noticed that my engine (22re) has sounded just a bit sluggish on the first crank--not a crisp fire up.

Today, on my way to work I heard a faint whining sound from the speakers. It grew louder as I moved through my morning commute. Exiting off the freeway and onto surface streets, the noise got louder, and then the check engine light flickered on while waiting at a light. The engine slightly stumbled, but I throttled it, and the engine light flicked off.

I popped the hood at work, and there is a lope to the engine idle. From the exhaust there is a slight popping, or rough idle detected. When I moved back into the cab, the radio was off, but I was hearing a whining coming from the dash cluster.

I recently had the engine rebuilt (1 year warranty) and the cat replaced. Could this be a back pressure issue? Perhaps a ˟˟˟˟ty weld around the cat? But why the whining in the cab electronics?

Not how I wanted to start my Friday! Any help is appreciated.

CEL or brake light?

Noise in sound system is your charging system.

Thanks for the quick reply.

Sorry what is CEL? and what are you asking about it and the brake light?

Would the charging system cause rough idling?

CEL = Check Engine Light (or MIL, Malfunction Indicator Lamp)
Your truck is (desperately) trying to tell you something. You have to listen.

You will see that you need a SST (Special Service Tool). They are very expensive. http://www.staples.com/Staples-Jumbo...product_525923

The whining can also come from just about anywhere in the ignition. But first things first -- good luck!

Thanks scope103. I guess I will take the truck back in to have the diagnostics run.

Uh, are you sure you need to "take it back in"?

Run the diagnostics yourself. Please. It will be fun. I was kidding about the "expensive."

Whoa...didn't look at the link (reading this on my phone browser), I thought it was referencing the Toyota-hand-held meter. I already have a little jumper wire that I used for setting the timing, so i guess I will try this out later today and see what codes I can pull.

Good lookin out, and for catching my error.

I would assume noise in speakers is either your charging system, or RFI. which is commonly cause by the ignition system, Such as spark plug wires. being a extremely high voltage, it can effect things like your trucks performance by messing with the ecu. This is one reason plug wires have such a thick coating, and their resistance is in the kilo ohms. Check their coating, its a possibility they are the cause.
