IFS third member install - need help

Sorry if there is a thread about this already somewhere, if so, could you direct me to it?? Thanks

Ok fellas, I've been searching everywhere for some tricks and ideas on how to get the CVs onto their respective studs. Just in general I need help with ways of making this go smoother. It's HEAVY heavy and awkward and I'm hoping you dudes have some tricks to make this easier. If the trick is to take it to a mechanic haha I'll accept that.

Cheers guys
Appreciate any input you have

Drive the studs out or disconnect the lower ball joint from the knuckle. Try searching.

Thanks for the ideas though, have you ever hammered the studs out before or heard how difficult it is? Would it cause damage?

Yes you can damage the studs if you aren't careful. I leave them in place and disconnect the lower ball joints. Much easier.

I removed 4 studs on each side and replaced with bolts...for the *next* removal They can be driven out a couple different ways:
1. Air hammer with a dull point tip. Pushed them out like butter - this is the method I used with the shafts still installed into the 3rd member.
2. BFH and leave the nut on the end upside down and a few threads above the edge of the stud. You strike the flat side of the nut vs. the stud itself. Preserves the threads more. Still, when doing this use your head. This is the method I used with the shafts out of the 3rd member as loose parts.

BMcEL I think you are mistaking my lack of ability to navigate the site for not looking. I'm not computer savvy and I really appreciate your help. Cheers!

Angrybob can I use the BFH method with the shaft still attached to the third or is there another risk there?

Put the nuts on the end of the studs before hammering them! (So much pun).
The studs hammer out easily, just don't grind down the splines like some threads say.
They are easy to line up again.
Removing the studs makes installing the IFS diff almost a one person job. Almost.

All the info you need here... And I did a write up on it as well(not sure if it's one of those links that my bud BMcel posted up, haha)..... Suckers are heavy, aint they? They'll flatten a finger or 3! ....and HAVE, as I've seen happen at the pick-your-part .... WOW that was disturbing to see!

Best wishes,.... and YES, put the GF to work, I agree!

I realize why I couldn't find any of these great links...They don't have anything to do with installing a whole assembled ifs third member and getting the studs up past the cv shafts. Thanks though.

That came out condescending for some reason, BMcEL, your links were very close to what I need but funny enough your idea about knocking the studs out worked wonders! All fingers attached still!
Chefyota - I've seen you around here a lot! Pleasure to "meet" ya! Haha mostly seen you on that couples journey to south America I believe, and your build thread. Amazing isn't it!
Cheers from Vancouver, Canada
Thanks again for all the help fellas
