My PS pump went out so I will be installing a replacement. I was thinking about getting rid of the VSV for a couple reasons: 1) I'm not sure it is really working right now, since my idle doesn't increase when I turn (at a stop) and 2) it is one less thing to cause problems in the future.

Thoughts?

 

Remove it & block the vacuum lines. I haven't missed mine in the past 4 years....

 

You'll need to set the idle up without it (or risk killing the engine when you're parallel parking). But as you've seen, lots of people get by with one or both of those conditions.

When I replaced my PS pump the rebuilt came with a new idle-up (VSV) valve, so it was a no-brainer for me to reinstall it and enjoy the convenience designed in by Toyota.

 

I did the same when replacing mine and have yet to see/feel any effect from it. I must be doing something wrong.

and call it good. I sometimes find I need a bit more power steering boost at idle and if so, I just blip the throttle with my foot.

 

Sounds like a plan. I guess if the rebuild comes with a new VSV I'll use it (I don't think it does), otherwise I'll just do away with it.

With normal operation of the VSV, should the idle remain constant or increase a little when you turn? As it is right now (well, before the pump went out), my idle stays constant when I turn.

 

Should be just like the A/C idle up (if you have A/C). Supposed to bump up the idle speed to the point you have the fast idle adjustment screw set to when the p/s pump goes into high pressure mode, like if you have the tires against a rock (or curb) and try to steer.
