odometer runs without truck moving?

I have recently swapped cabs on my 84 pickup due to a four wheeling accident and now when I start the engine the odometer starts rolling miles on while im not moving? Does anyone have any idea on what could cause this? Any input would help... Thanks.

I'm not sure but that's bad for resale value haha. Does the speedo move too or just the odometer?

If it is running backwards you are going to die. At least that is what happens in Stephen king movies. Christine is back.

Did you find the cause of the problem yet ? On a truck with a mechanical speedometer the only thing in there that can move the odometer is the speedometer cable. If it was an electronic speedometer it could be a short . Other than that I stumped.

sounds like a short causing the odometer to constantly get some kind of signal..
Find out how much the odometer is moving per minute?

Possible stuck relay? Bad sending unit?

So with the cab swap, what all was swapped? Was the speedo/odo the original one? If so, it should be mechanical, driven by the speedo cable out of the back of the t-case, unless someone swapped in an early '92 cluster w/ electronic speedo/odo. Check the cable out of the back of the t-case and see if it is a rotating mechanical cable or if it is the VSS (electronic sender) with a wire running from it.

Kind of impossible since that is a mechanical speedometer. The only thing I can think of is one of the gears on the odometer broke and the vibration of engine is causing the odometer to move. Try turning the truck off and bang on the top of the dash to see if it moves.

Might as well yell some expletives as well. Works for me when I can't or don't know how to fix something and it usually fixes itself by the time I am done.
