Pulling the 22r, couple quick questions.
So i've got everything off the engine, sensors, grounds, pumps, etc..... It is bare sitting in the engine bay. I realize it may have been easier to take it all off after it was out, but this is just how I chose to do it since I have never done it before.
My questions are:
I have removed the bolts between the tranny and the engine (perimeter of the tranny, maybe 8-10 in total), is there anything else needed to release those two?
I am getting it rebuilt, so I need to take everything off of it, when taking the crank pulley off do I need to mark it or will it only go on one way? I had taken it off quite some time ago on a previous yota, but can't really remember.
Lastly, when removing the engine what types of things should I make note of or be extremely cautious about? Anything with the tranny? Just curious, so I can get it back together and functional again with out huge headaches.
Thanks for any help guys!! Definitely wouldn't be anywhere close to where I am on this thing w/o the help of the forum. Pretty much torn apart the entire truck. lol.

First for better answers please post what year and make you have if it is a auto or stick.
As far as taking it out, there is a bolt on the top of the trans that is not easy to see. so depending on the trans is how to get to it best.
I have found that dropping the trans before removing the engine is easier and putting the engine back in lining the trans to the block when the block is already in is easier than the block to the trans. Does that make sense?
hope fully you labeled everything and where it goes before you tore it apart. I don't do it and regret it every time especially with vacuum lines.
Where you located? close to Denver, I could help.
Off topic......What about that world cup?.....I was so consumed....oops sorry.

Im guessing it is a standard, getting that crankbolt off would of been easier by using the starter. That thing is really torqed on there. The crank pulley is keyed, so you wont have to mark it. Make sure you have some support under the tranny and just start pulling slowly and see and keep looking around to make sure you got everything loose. By yur post and not being able to see what all is taken off cant really tell if you might of missed something. At the very least I would have a Haynes manual, it will help you alot.

I've got the FSM.
I have an 84 runner with a 5speed. I felt behind the tranny on top and didn't see/feel and screws. There were two that were slightly offset from the very top of the tranny and I got those along with the one that is by the clutch cylinder (was a bitch w/o removing the cylinder first.
I labeled all the screws and what not and put them with the appropriate parts. I have quite of few photos of the engine before taking it apart and I've taken it apart once before, just not out. I also desmogged it, so there aren't too many lines left on it. That made things much simpler.
I can get a couple photos if that would help. Yes, I was definitely thinking of some tranny support. If possible, I would like to just leave the tranny in, so I will probably go that route or try to.
I do have the FSM.
The world cup, it was good watching. I was a little disappointed at the US's performance because they are better than that and got screwed a few time, but they have come a long way!!

So, there is no bolt directly on the top of the tranny. As far as those go, they are all out. I am pretty sure these are the last two things I need to know before pulling the engine.
Do I remove the screws on the motor mount that go to the engine or the frame?
Do I need to remove the clutch cylinder from the tranny before pulling the engine?

Got the engine out today and I'm still working on the other engine that I have on the stand and swapping brackets and cleaning etc... I'll try and get a photo of what I've got going even though everyone here has seen plenty of 22r engines.

just the trans bolts and the motor mounts, once it starts to split be ready. It may take several good jerks/. when i pull a motor i go and buy a box of sandwich bags and just start labeling them. Seems like a waste of time to some but when its time to put the motor back together you'll thank me.
Good luck!

Jumping on an older thread to keep from having to start a new one... I'm thinking of pulling my 22r, 5 speed engine to fix all the damn leaks that is has. Oil Pan, timing belt cover, rear main seal, seal between the tranny and the transfer case, etc..
I don't need to get into the engine too much as it only has 167,000 miles on it. Hard miles, but not a lot of 'em.
Is it worth pulling the engine just to clean it up, replace seals and gaskets, etc.
Also, I've pulled engines before and pulled out the tranny, too. Don't see anybody doing that with the 22r. It'd be nice to get that out of the way so I can deep clean where this beast has been throwing grease and oil for the past 25 years or so.
Thoughts?
Love the pictures and right ups on various things, by the way. I don't post a lot, but I visit and lurk on a regular basis.

Change of heart. Pulling the transmission to put clean up and change the clutch. Chaning the rear main seal with the engine in the truck, and leaving the engine in the truck for the rest of the stuff as well.
should be quite a bit easier this way.
