I recently acquired a rolled 85 runner. The motor apparently has 20,000kms on a fresh rebuild. I don't know how it ran before but starts and idles beautifully, it also burns oil now....barely noticeable at idle but when I open it up a bit it billows out.

A buddy of mine mentioned the valve seals pop out after a roll and I can most likely access them and push them back in place from the top end by removing the valve cover. Any merit to this? I will pull the cover later today and take a closer look but I'd like to go in armed with a few suggestions before I start tinkering

 

To access them from the top, you need to remove the rocker arms, which means you need to remove the head bolts. Your going to have to pull the head to see the full extent of the damage

 

if it sat upside down for awhile it could of leaked oil into the cylinders, and into the exhaust or intake ,depending on what valve was open at the time. since you have already started it, it is to late to remove the plugs and spin over the motor to clear the cylinders.if it cranked hard it may have been hydro locked ,that could have damaged the rings. hopefully it just needs to run and clear everything out.

 

It was only upside down for about 20 minutes. I have run it for a while hoping it would clear out. it blew smoke out even at idle for the first while...now it has moved on to only when I rev it up.

I won't go as far as removing the head....I'm just going to do a compression test and maybe a leakdown test and then sell the motor as it is...I can't be bothered to put any time into it. I bought the truck for the axle....the engine was just a bonus...soon it will be somebody else's problem

if the smoke is getting less and less the more it runs you prob just had a little oil leak into the cylinders when it was upside down and sooner or later it will all burn out, we have rolled this motors plenty of times and had just a little oil leak in and after a couple hundred miles they ran just the same, good luck though

 

couple hundred miles you say? ALright maybe I just need to burn it through this tank of gas and see if it gets better.

 

the ones ive seen rollled thats all it took, but they were not running long on there side, if oil just leaked in a little then everything should be cleared out but if so much oil got in there that it hydrolocked you might have bent a rod, does it seem to run strong and just smoke a little or do you notice a loss in power? but if the smokeing is decreasing you should be good itll just have to clean itself out

 

I haven't driven it...just idled and moved it around my driveway. I'll look a little deeper tonight and maybe try pushing or pulling something to see if the power is there. I will pull the valve cover and have a look as well as a compression test, this should reveal a few things.

I'll have to pound the roof out with a sledge hammer...and kick out the windshield action hero style just to fit in the drivers seat and see.

 

def do some test, i would pull the plugs and just try to turn it over and see if anything comes out the plug holes, i hope its not bad for you though good luck
