Question Replacement 5 speed trans ????

Hi all - I'm new to yotatech... Thanx for allowing me to join.
I have a question that I can't seem to get a straight answer on, locally...
I have a 1991 Toyota P/U 4cylinder 22re 5 speed manual that the trans needs help/swap out - Pops outa gear-tuff going into reverse and makes loud grinding noise in every gear but, mmm I think if I remember, 4th gear. I haven't driven it in a while, do to the trans problem. I use the truck as my back-up 4x4, work around the property truck and used to use back and forth to work...
Anyway enough chit chat - my question is that I have a friend that has a 5 speed trans out of a 6 cylinder 4runner (that he acquired) for a cheap $$$. But I told him I need to figure out of it's going to work b-4 I take it...

The only numbers he said he could find on the trans were on an adaptor plate between the tail housing and the main body housing. He's not sure the year-he's going to try to find out.

Does anyone here know if a 5 speed trans out of a 6 cylinder 4 runner will work in a 4 cylinder 91' P/U?

The short & sweet answer is no. The V6 & 4cyl bellhousings are different. Your stock trans should be some breed of W56.

There's always a way to adapt anything, just depends on how much work you want to do. You can search around and see if anyone's made one themselves, or if someone sells an adapter, but it would probably be cheaper to just find a 4 cylinder tranny. I agree though, it's too bad it's not easy to make it work. The 6 cylinder tranny is probably a bit stronger, too.

Only way to fit the V6 (R150) tranny to the 22RE is with a bellhousing from an R151 (22RE turbo) transmission. Plus with either the R150 (or R151) tranny, you would need to adapt the existing transfer case to work with the 23 spline output shaft on the R series transmissions. All is possible, but does cost money.

I had a thought –
What if between my shot trans in the truck now, and this V6 trans that my friend has, could I make one trans out of the two? - Taking the parts from the old/shot trans (bellhousing, output shaft, ect. )into the V6 trans, to work for my truck? Or would that be too much of a headache, especially since I don’t know what all has to be done / swapped out….? Is there more to it - more parts to get that the old trans wont have? Or are the parts from the two tranny's not interchangeable ???

I would say the parts from the two trannys are not interchangeable.

Just a question, but if you can't utilize that transmission..... I might be interested, seeing how mine with 249,000 miles is kicking out of gear and grinding pretty bad. Just a thought. Don't mean to be a snake, but I always am looking....
Thanks,

Tadd
