Replaced my distributor and now it sounds awful
#1
I replaced my distributor because it locked up and wouldn't turn. I'm thought I installed it right. I put it at top dead center and made sure by checking the looseness of the #1 valves and pulling the spark plug and looking at the cylinder. The rotor was pointing at the #1 plug wire in the same spot as before. But now it runs loud like there is a hole in the exhaust manifold and it will die if I try to let it idle.
What did I do wrong? I'v trying adjusting the distributor cap so it feels like the correct timing, but something is definitely still wrong. Help, Thanks

what does it sound like?
what does your timing light tell you?
does the idle smooth out if you turn it one direction or another?
these answers should help you fix the problem.

It sounds like a hole in the exhaust. Its like I can hear the pistons firing. Like a muffled machine gun is the best example I can think of. Its consistent with vehicle speed, although it gets quieter the faster I go.

So... https://www.yotatech.com/forums/f116.../#post51096640
... has nothing to do with replacing your distributor?
On a whim I pulled the distributer cap and cranked the engine to see if it was even spinning and it wasn't. So I pulled it out and a bunch of teeth were broken off. So I'm guessing thats why there is no spark and why it was misfiring before.
Tommorro I'll install a new one. Maybe it wasn't the ignitor at all.

You had a thread about the igniter, found the distributor wasn't spinning, posted about it in that thread, and said you'd replace it and then started a new thread about the new distributor.

Yes. Set your engine to TDC and then insert the distributer at 12 o'clock and it will rotate to where it needs to be. You may need to set your timing as well.
Also was it running right before the teeth were sheered off? I'm not sure if just slapping in a new distributer is going to fix it. Like abe said something else might have gotten messed up as well.

rdlsz24, I'll re-ajust the distributor tonight. Originally the engine died because it seized up. It was running kinda crappy before it broke. When I took it out it was completely seized with metal shavings shoved were it definitely should not be. It wouldn't spin at all. It runs smooth enough for now, just noisy.

Sounds like the Dis is not in the correct position. Although when mine was 1 tooth off when I replaced my HG it just barely ran. I was 1 tooth retarded advanced it 1 and all was well. I think you may have more problems than that though. Dist gears just don't strip...I had on shaft brake on my but that was on an 1980 280ZX and the shaft was pitted an worn halfway down...I may have been running a bit hard as well.
