My brights will not turn on

First off my truck is an 84 pick up sr5, When i purchased the truck the brights never worked only the regular headlights, whenever i would try to turn the brights on the headlights would turn off completely using both switch positions the constant and the "pass" function. Earlier today i decided to take the switch apart and see if it was just dirty and or broken, What i found was one of the wires came off of the switch so i soldered it back on and cleaned everything else on the switch i put it back together. Now when i turn the headlights on and try to use the brights in the forward switch position everything turns off, in the "pass" position the headlights stay on now but still no brights. The fuses for both lights are good and i can hear the relay clicking i dont know how to check the relay for sure though. any ideas and or suggestions would be appreciated

Thanks, Ed

Clean the contacts on that switch you repaired:

And note if you have any headlights lighting up (low or high beam in any mode) your relay (as in one single relay for everything) is working fine.

I had the same problem with my headlights on my 94 4Runner a year and a half ago. I just went to the junk yard and got a new steering column switch assembly for $25. Pulled off the steering wheel and swaped out the switch assembly. Everything works fine now. For a $25 part I did not feel like sinking time into hunting down the short or bad connection. Plus the switches form the junk yard still had the white lettering which had faded off my old signal levers. looked like new.

You could have wiring issues at the terminal box next to the battery. Dim and Brite come back thru there to ground at the combination switch on the steering column.... could be a broken wire between the 'splice' and the terminal box.... the splice for each side occurs in the harness underneath the battery... acid will get in there and eat the splice...

I just got it all figured out today i cleaned the contacts again and it still wasnt working right so after some close inspection i saw that one of the contact lever things was bent and not making any contact on the switch at all so everything works great now thanks for the suggestions everyone. But now my hazards don't work...I love wires

The headlight relay in the fuse box under the hood could be bad.

If you ave any headlight function then the relay is fine.
